Crystal Palace chairman Ron Noades had written to every first division chairman asking for backing for the setting up of a second division of the premier league. In a proposed but controversial move, football league was to be decimated and replaced by an extension of the premier league into another division which would give traditionally bigger clubs more share of the revenue from the premier league broadcasting pot even if they get relegated as oppose to getting no share if they get demoted to the football league. Likes of Newcastle United and Burnley had already given their support for the proposal.
