Régis Le Bris
Sunderland is set to kick off their Premier League campaign against West Ham United this weekend, with head coach Régis Le Bris emphasizing that starting positions are still up for grabs. As the team prepares for their opening match, Le Bris remains focused on assessing player performances in training this week. Sunderland’s recent pre-season friendlies saw a mix of results, with a 1-0 victory over FC Augsburg followed by a 3-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano at the Stadium of Light.
Régis Le Bris said: “We’ll see this week. This is still the case. In two or three positions I can choose one or two. I think we’re in a good place. Now I’m looking forward to next weekend.”
The starting lineup for Saturday’s match will be influenced by Sunderland’s ongoing transfer activities and the match fitness of recent signings. The club is nearing a deal to acquire Getafe’s central defender Omar Alderete, while Arthur Masuaku, a former West Ham United and Besiktas full-back, has joined Sunderland as a free agent.
Despite the defeat to Rayo Vallecano, Le Bris assured that the players involved remain integral to his plans for the upcoming match and the season ahead.
Régis Le Bris explained: “It was a strong opponent ready for La Liga. Between Augsburg and Rayo Vallecano, we can feel that the first squad is very connected and this is the main squad for the beginning of the season. And then today, we have three, four, five players ready for this squad as well. It is more difficult for them in this moment because they are connecting with less experienced players and the level is a little below, but they worked [hard] and it was the right decision for next weekend.”
The head coach is still deliberating over his starting XI, with Noah Sadiki potentially ahead of Enzo Le Fée at this stage. Nevertheless, Le Bris reiterated that Le Fée remains a significant part of his strategy.
Régis Le Bris stated: “We’ll have two or three players like Enzo, really close to the starting XI but at the same time we have to make a choice because we can only play with 11 players. We need to build starters and finishes. Our midfielders will have this opportunity, that’s really clear. It’s the same for our strikers.”
Sunderland’s preparation for the Premier League opener is marked by strategic assessments and tactical decisions. As Le Bris continues to fine-tune his squad, the focus remains on building a cohesive team capable of competing at the highest level. The upcoming match against West Ham United will be a significant test of Sunderland’s readiness and adaptability as they embark on their Premier League journey.
