Leeds United have confirmed the return of Jonny Howson to the club, this time in a dual role as a player-coach for their Under-21 squad. The 37-year-old midfielder, who left Middlesbrough last month, has already begun his new role, having participated in a friendly match against Hartlepool United with the academy team. This appointment marks Howson’s first association with Leeds United since his departure to Norwich City in 2012.
Leeds United said: “Jonny will join Scott Gardner’s Under-21s side in a player-coach role, offering a huge amount of experience to help with the development of our young players at a key time in their early careers. The move is part of a longer-term strategy of the Academy, with the aim of fielding a young Under-21s side, ensuring early opportunities for our most talented youngsters who can be guided on the pitch by senior players, including the 37-year-old.”
Jonny Howson said: “Once I heard about the opportunity and with what this club means to me, it was something I was really excited about. I feel I can really offer something to the group as I have been where they are now and I am definitely a bit biased, but we all want to see academy players progressing through this club. So if I can help off the pitch, or on it when required, then it is something I am really excited about and I can’t wait to get going.”
Jonny Howson’s return to Leeds United is a significant step for the club’s academy, as it aligns with their long-term strategy of nurturing young talent. By integrating experienced players like Howson into the coaching setup, Leeds aims to provide its Under-21 squad with invaluable guidance and mentorship on and off the field. Howson’s familiarity with the club and his professional journey offer a relatable perspective for the young players aspiring to make their mark in professional football.
The move is also a testament to Howson’s enduring connection with Leeds United, a club where he began his professional career. His enthusiasm for contributing to the development of future talents underscores the club’s commitment to fostering a robust pathway for academy graduates into the first team. As Leeds prepares for the upcoming 2025/26 Premier League season, Howson’s involvement is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of Leeds United stars.
