Amidst growing speculation about Alexander Isak’s future, reports have emerged suggesting that the Swedish striker is contemplating a move away from Newcastle United. With only a few clubs capable of meeting Isak’s significant wage demands, Liverpool and Manchester City have been identified as potential suitors. The situation intensified when Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s manager, excluded Isak from the squad for a recent friendly against Celtic, citing a minor thigh injury. This development has fueled further rumors about his potential departure from St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe said: “It was my decision. He travelled back to Glasgow with us, but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him. Both [Joelinton and Isak] are fit but not ready to play. Alex has trained and is fine, but we didn’t want to take the risk with him. Yes, I’ve had discussions with him, but that’s not abnormal. I respect a player’s career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he’s trained really well and I realise there’ll be noise around him. We have a few of those players who are irreplaceable. Your top players are so hard to find, so hard to recruit and so hard to develop. So when you have them, you need to treasure them. Of course, we’re desperate to keep him as part of our team. I think it’s difficult for me to ever give 100 per cent clarity on any player, I’d never do that. All I can say is Alex is happy at Newcastle, he loves the players, the staff, the team. I’ve never had any issue with him and I’m confident he’s going to be here at the start of the season.”
Isak’s potential move is further complicated by the financial implications. Should he leave Newcastle for another Premier League club, his wage demands could make him one of the highest-paid players in the league’s history. This places him in the company of Premier League stars like Erling Haaland, who remains under contract until 2034. Liverpool, known admirers of Isak, have reportedly expressed interest in signing him, as previously reported by the Liverpool Echo.
The decision to leave Isak out of the Celtic match and the subsequent discussions between Howe and the player underscore the delicate nature of the situation. Howe’s comments highlight the value Newcastle places on Isak, describing him as irreplaceable and integral to the team’s future. Despite the swirling rumors, Howe remains optimistic about Isak’s commitment to Newcastle, emphasizing the player’s happiness and strong relationships within the club.
As the transfer window progresses, Isak’s situation will be closely monitored, with fans and clubs alike eager to see where the talented striker will ply his trade next season.
