Olivier Boscagli

Brighton & Hove Albion have secured the services of Olivier Boscagli, a versatile defender who joins the club as a free agent. Boscagli, who primarily plays as a centre-back, had been on Brighton’s radar for over a year. Initially, it seemed the Seagulls would have to pay for his transfer, but circumstances changed, allowing them to acquire him without a fee. Boscagli’s journey to the Amex Stadium was not straightforward, as he had to overcome the disappointment of a failed move last summer.
Olivier Boscagli said: “In my head, it was difficult to accept this, because I explained to my club my wishes. I was there already for five years, and we won all the trophies. We won our first championship, so it was, I think, the perfect time for me to make the step, but they decided differently. It’s what I said also to the PSV fans, because I’m trying to be as open as possible and explain my feelings. I had two options. I had the first option to just, like, give up and say, ‘Okay, I will stay here for a year, then I will stay in the dressing room or in the physio room and say I have a bit of pain, I don’t want to play, I don’t want to do this’. And at my age, I think there’s no year to lose. So, I just say, ‘Okay, everything is done now, I can’t change it, so let’s be better and play again’. I knew that the target was to be champion again. That’s what we did. And playing Champions League games. It’s difficult to refuse to play Champions League, to be honest. With the years I passed there, the people I met there, I couldn’t be this bad. It was also, I think, good for me to just keep going and try to give my best as possible. Of course, in my head, it was difficult to switch from disappointment to play again and be 100% ready for the club. But at the end, I tried to do it and I think I did it quite well. I get good feedback from this.”
Boscagli’s determination and professionalism were evident as he helped PSV Eindhoven secure a second consecutive Eredivisie title last season. Despite the initial setback of not moving to Brighton, he focused on his performances, which included playing in the Champions League. His positive attitude and resilience impressed both his teammates and the coaching staff at PSV.
Olivier Boscagli added: “But I was confident because I got a good talk with Mike. And the coach, they also said to me, ‘Don’t worry, if we’re not going to get you this year, we’re going to get you next’. So, it was also something that I really liked and it helped me to make this choice this year.”
Assistant Technical Director Mike Cave and head coach Fabian Hurzeler played pivotal roles in ensuring Boscagli remained committed to joining Brighton. Their assurances that the club would eventually secure his services provided Boscagli with the confidence to continue performing at a high level.
Boscagli’s journey to Brighton is a testament to his perseverance and adaptability. His ability to overcome disappointment and maintain focus on his goals has finally led him to the Premier League. As he begins this new chapter with Brighton, Boscagli brings with him the experience of winning titles and playing at the highest level in European competitions.
