David Moyes
David Moyes has been endorsed as the ideal candidate to rejuvenate Everton’s fortunes during a crucial phase in the club’s history. Former Everton player Terry Phelan expressed his admiration for Moyes, revealing that he once considered joining the Scot early in Moyes’ managerial career. Moyes, who previously led Everton to nine top-eight finishes, including their highest Premier League position of fourth in the 2004/05 season, returned to Goodison Park in January after nearly 13 years away.
Terry Phelan said: “David Moyes is a manager. He’s not a PlayStation manager, he’s an actual manager. He understands the methodology and the terminology of the football club. He had a big black mark against him when he left Everton to go to Manchester United, but he’s won a trophy at West Ham where he was absolutely fantastic and has now gone back and done wonders. He’s a proper, proper old-school manager and the modern-day player has got to get used to him, because he’s a winner.”
He continued: “I remember having the chance to go play for Moyesy years and years ago when it was him and Jimmy Lumsden at Preston and they were looking at me. I was like: ‘Yeah, no problem.’ I thought I’d have loved to have played for David Moyes. I love that type of personality.”
Phelan added: “I think he’s the right fit for Everton. Managers look at players in different ways, don’t they? No disrespect to Dychey, I thought he did well at Everton under a lot of constraints, but David Moyes knows Everton and the Everton people. Moyesy is fantastic at nurturing and moulding those kind of players and it’s about trust as well.”
Moyes’ return to Everton has been met with optimism, especially given his successful stint at West Ham, where he secured a trophy. His old-school managerial style and deep understanding of Everton’s culture are seen as key assets in navigating the club through challenging times. Phelan’s reflections highlight Moyes’ ability to identify and develop talent, a trait that has been crucial in Everton’s recent climb from a precarious position near the relegation zone to securing their Premier League status with five games to spare.
Everton’s recent performances under Moyes have demonstrated his capability to adapt and make strategic decisions that benefit the team. His focus on player attributes and trust-building has been pivotal in fostering a competitive squad. As Everton looks to the future, Moyes’ leadership and experience are expected to play a significant role in the club’s ambitions.
