Manchester United has high hopes for their latest signing, Matheus Cunha, who recently joined the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Brazilian international finalized his move to Old Trafford last week after United activated his £62.5 million release clause. Cunha, who signed a five-year contract, is expected to bolster United’s attacking prowess with his goal-scoring and playmaking abilities.
Matheus Cunha said: “At the time we changed the manager, he came in and told me, ‘Matheus, I can only say to you, be a little bit more free’. He gave me all the confidence to play well. It was a little bit easier because I did well last season, 14 goals. I think I did this only because he came and said to me to be free, show yourself. They were important words for me. Coming from Atletico was a little bit hard.”
Cunha’s transition to Manchester United marks a new chapter in his career, following a successful stint at Wolves where he scored 17 goals in the 2024/25 season. His former manager at Wolves, Gary O’Neil, played a crucial role in his development, encouraging Cunha to embrace his freedom on the pitch. This approach paid dividends, as Cunha netted 22 goals and provided 12 assists under O’Neil’s guidance.
Omar Berrada said: “He’s a player that I think fans are going to love. We can talk about his technical abilities and he can play in three different positions. He’s a playmaking attacking midfielder; he can score goals, he can make assists. I think he’s going to lift people off their seats.”
Cunha’s versatility and flair are expected to excite Manchester United supporters. Known for his swagger and ability to play in multiple positions, he is set to occupy the left-sided No.10 role in manager Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. With his knack for both scoring and creating goals, Cunha is poised to become a fan favorite and a key figure in United’s quest for success.
