Newcastle United is actively searching for a new under-21s coach after Diarmuid O’Carroll departed to join Sparta Prague’s first-team setup. O’Carroll, who has been instrumental in developing young talents at Newcastle, expressed his gratitude and wished the club continued success. His departure marks another significant loss for Newcastle’s academy, following similar exits by Ben Dawson and Graeme Carrick last summer.
Diarmuid O’Carroll said: “I’ve absolutely loved my time working at Newcastle United. I didn’t envisage it being this short but this opportunity was too exciting for me to turn down. It’s genuinely been a real pleasure working with top staff and with some very exciting young players. I wish everyone at the club nothing but continued success going forward.”
O’Carroll’s tenure at Newcastle saw him work closely with promising players such as Leo Shahar, Trevan Sanusi, and Sean Neave, leading a youthful squad to a respectable ninth place in Premier League 2. His move to Sparta Prague highlights the growing trend of Newcastle’s academy staff being recruited for first-team roles elsewhere.
Steve Harper, Newcastle’s academy director, acknowledged the allure of the opportunity for O’Carroll and has promptly initiated the search for his successor. The club is seeking an “inspirational, experienced” coach to nurture the next generation of players and align the under-21s’ development with the first team’s playing style.
An excerpt from the job description read: “You’ll be responsible for delivering a coaching programme that reflects our academy’s playing and coaching philosophies, aligning closely with the first team’s style. Working with key staff, you’ll lead the planning, delivery, and review of the U21 squad’s development, ensuring a high-performance environment that supports both team success and individual growth.”
The role demands a collaborative approach, with responsibilities including managing all aspects of the under-21 games’ program, overseeing player progression, and contributing to succession planning from under-16 to under-21 levels. The ideal candidate will also work closely with multidisciplinary teams, monitor loan players, and ensure performance data is recorded in accordance with EPPP standards.
Newcastle United’s 2024-25 season has been one of the most memorable in recent history, with Eddie Howe’s team securing a Champions League spot and ending a long silverware drought by winning the Carabao Cup. The club is now focused on sustaining this success by investing in its youth development, ensuring a bright future for the Magpies.
