Andre Onana
Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Brazilian goalkeeper Santos as a potential replacement for their current No. 1, Andre Onana. The German publication BILD claimed in April that United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, had met with Frankfurt to discuss a £51 million transfer for the talented goalkeeper.
Santos said: “The management in Frankfurt showed tremendous confidence in me. They wanted to continue working with me before these rumors even surfaced. They still have a lot of faith in me here, so it was clear to me that I wanted to extend my contract. I want to establish myself as a goalkeeper, perform well, and achieve as much as possible.”
Santos, who joined Eintracht Frankfurt from Brazilian club Flamengo in 2023, has quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, surpassing long-time keeper Kevin Trapp. His performances have been instrumental in Frankfurt’s successes, including DFB Cup and Europa League victories, as well as their qualification for the Champions League. Santos expressed his desire to continue contributing to the club’s achievements.
Santos added: “The club has shown repeatedly with the DFB Cup and Europa League victories, as well as with our Champions League qualification great things are possible here. I want to help repeat such successes.”
Meanwhile, Andre Onana’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain. The 29-year-old has struggled to find form this season, leading to increased speculation about his potential departure. Reports suggest that United are open to offers for several players as they look to rebuild under Ruben Amorim after a challenging season.
Onana said: “We’ll see,” when asked by Afrik-Foot on whether he could depart United this summer.
Despite the rumors, previous reports from The Athletic have indicated that Onana is likely to stay at the club. However, Ruben Amorim acknowledged that mistakes are part of the game and expressed understanding for Onana’s situation.
Amorim said: “It can happen. If you play football, you’ll play a lot of games, and you can make mistakes. If you look at the season, I make more mistakes than them during these last games and these last months.”
As Manchester United navigate their transfer strategy, the club’s openness to selling players to fund new acquisitions highlights the potential for significant changes in the squad. The pursuit of Santos underscores United’s ambition to strengthen their goalkeeping options as they aim for a more successful campaign next season.
