Southampton FC players have taken a proactive step to enhance the physical development of young athletes through their new venture, P2 Performance. This initiative aims to teach children aged 8-16 essential motor skills and improve their strength and conditioning.

Palmer said: “We’ve both done sport science degrees, and it’s something that we’re very passionate about. We did some coaching, and some of the parents told us it would be really good if we could get young kids into strength and conditioning and injury prevention. We know the importance of getting that instilled at such a young age.”

Palmer, who made her senior debut at Bristol City before turning 17, emphasized the significance of early gym sessions, which she lacked during her development years. Her experience has fueled her commitment to teaching young athletes functional movements in a fun and engaging manner.

Palmer continued: “I think I did my first gym session when I was 16, 17. For us to be teaching eight-to-16 year olds functional movements in a fun manner is so important. It will not only help them prevent injury, but it will help them in the long run for their performance in football and outside of football. It’s for everyday life. I think children have changed since we were kids.”

Southampton captain Purfield added insights on the broader benefits of football and sports in general. She highlighted the importance of gaining experiences and knowledge through sports, which can open various avenues for young athletes.

Purfield said: “I think that people forget the experiences football gives you and the knowledge that you can gain from it. I think it’s really important to kind of broaden your horizons, and that’s what we want to do. We’re lucky enough to both have degrees. We always tell someone that goes into professional football to have a backup plan — always keep learning, whether that is in football or not.”

P2 Performance sessions are designed to be inclusive, catering to children of all abilities. The program not only focuses on physical development but also provides a platform for social interaction and friendship building.

Purfield concluded: “We’ve got a range of abilities that are already down, and we make it fun. We’re personable. We’ll get to know you. We’ll look after you, and we’ll make it enjoyable so that you can go home having learned something.”

This initiative by Southampton’s players is a testament to their dedication to nurturing the next generation of athletes, ensuring they are well-prepared both physically and mentally for their future endeavors.
