Tottenham Hotspur have found themselves in a precarious position this season, languishing in 16th place in the Premier League table. The club’s failure to secure a victory in their last ten matches has plunged them into a relegation battle, a situation that could have severe financial implications. Despite being considered one of the ‘big six’ in English football, the threat of relegation looms large over the Lilywhites.
The former Manchester City financial adviser said: “There’s no impact there, whether they’re in the Premier League or not. Then the other part of it is what happens with the sponsors. Let’s say it’s £50m at least.” He continued: “They’re going to lose UEFA money because it’s now clear that unless Tottenham can win the Champions League this season, they will not have European football next season. I would think you’re looking at a £150m, £175m, maybe a £200m of a loss in revenue if they were relegated.”
Johan Lange said: “The summer market is where eight or nine out of 10 players, they move clubs, so we will go into the summer window with big ambitions of strengthening the team. Could we have brought one or two more in this January window? We would have been delighted to do so, but that was not a possibility. So, we are looking forward to the summer, now we focus on the rest of the season and that is very, very important as well because we have big objectives.”
The financial ramifications of relegation for Tottenham could be substantial. The loss of Premier League status would not only affect sponsorship deals but also result in the loss of UEFA money, as the club would miss out on European competitions. The estimated financial loss could range from £150m to £200m. Despite the challenges, Tottenham’s sporting director, Johan Lange, remains optimistic about the club’s future. He expressed his ambitions to strengthen the team during the summer transfer window, acknowledging the importance of focusing on the remainder of the current season.
With Tottenham still competing in the Champions League, the club hopes to turn their fortunes around. However, the road ahead is fraught with challenges, including selection dilemmas, VAR controversies, and transfer decisions. As the season progresses, the club’s ability to navigate these hurdles will be crucial in determining their fate in the Premier League.
