Igor Tudor
Tottenham Hotspur’s interim head coach, Igor Tudor, has been navigating a challenging start to his tenure at the North London club. With upcoming Premier League fixtures, including a crucial match against Crystal Palace, Tudor has been addressing both his coaching style and the team’s current struggles. Despite his reputation as a no-nonsense defender during his playing days, Tudor insists on a more personal approach with his players.
Igor Tudor said: “Always the players need honesty. One of the skills of a coach is to be honest, in the right way of course, to speak with them. Without honesty you are dead. They need to recognise in you that here is a person who wants to say the things from a good (place), not in a negative way. They need to recognise in you that you are telling them for the best. Then you can tell them everything.”
Tudor continued: “Who says that? That’s not true. Without hugging, without connection with the player you cannot do anything. It’s not true. The players will say ‘who are you?’ There is a relationship, there is honesty. There is a right way to do it. You have totally the wrong image of me.”
He added: “I’m sure they are aware of the mistake they made and they will not do in the future. Not nice, not nice. Vicario is a fantastic guy, a fantastic player. I spoke with him. He’s OK. It’s part of the job, with the social media. For sure it is not good, but we are living in an era of information. Every day, hundreds of new information bombarding these players. They need to be strong. They need to accept. For sure when I was a player I lived in a better world from that point of view. You could have your life as normal. Now there are two lives.”
Tudor’s comments come after a challenging start, with defeats against Arsenal and Fulham, and ahead of a significant match against Crystal Palace. The Croatian coach, known for his tough approach, emphasized the importance of honesty and personal connection with players, countering perceptions of his disciplinarian style. He defended his goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, after a social media incident, highlighting the pressures players face in the digital age.
Tudor also discussed tactical adjustments, such as playing Gallagher in an unfamiliar wide position due to squad limitations. He praised Richarlison’s versatility and positive influence, expressing optimism about the Brazilian’s contributions in upcoming matches. Despite previous successes at clubs like Juventus and Marseille, Tudor acknowledged the unique challenges at Tottenham, particularly the fight against relegation.
While Tudor refrained from detailing the club’s internal issues, he expressed determination to secure a victory against Crystal Palace, hoping to alleviate some of the challenges faced by the team.
