Manchester Cityâs Phil Foden has admitted that their chances of securing a fifth consecutive Premier League title have diminished. This comes just a day after Liverpoolâs head coach, Arne Slot, suggested that Manchester City remained a significant threat in the title race.
Phil Foden said, âdone for sureâ
Fodenâs comments were made after his two goals at Brentford were negated by two late goals from the Bees. This match was seen as a missed opportunity to prove Slotâs assertion that the reigning champions could still go on winning streaks. The way the game ended, with Brentfordâs Yoanne Wissa and Christian Norgaard scoring the goals, revealed weaknesses within the City team.
Phil Foden said, âThe title? Yeah, yeah, itâs done for sure, itâs done. We know. Weâre not stupid. So weâve got to aim for top four, thatâs the next target now and then obviously Champions League as well. So itâs not as if the season has gone. But weâve got to be realistic, havenât we? The performances have not been good enough to get up there. The top four is our aim now and then see where we can be in the other trophies.â
Despite the setback, Foden remains optimistic about the teamâs chances in the Champions League. However, he acknowledges that their performances have not been up to par.
In the match against Brentford, City showed promise in their forward play but struggled to control the game. The team, led by Pep Guardiola, is currently dealing with a spate of injuries, leading to players playing more minutes than usual. Foden believes these issues have contributed to their struggles this season, but he is hesitant to use it as an excuse.
Phil Foden said, âPossibly itâs both of them. Weâve not got the biggest squad but we canât really make excuses. Itâs something to work on. I believe weâre getting a little bit better now, so thatâs a positive to take from the game.â
