Former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has criticized Chelsea’s decision to loan out Andrey Santos to Strasbourg. The 20-year-old Brazilian has been performing well in France, leading to calls from Chelsea supporters for the club to recall him.
Emmanuel Petit said “Players like Andrey Santos were let go and look at him now, he’s scored multiple goals for Strasbourg in Ligue 1. He is shining in France. This is something Chelsea need to look at.”
Petit also commented on the performance of academy player Josh Acheampong, who has been impressive despite the club’s wealth of central defenders.
Emmanuel Petit said “Josh Acheampong looked really good, he’s needed whilst Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile are injured. It’s amazing how many central defenders Chelsea have but it’s still the academy youngster who looks like he could be one of the best at the club.”
He further emphasized the importance of young players seizing their opportunities, especially at a club like Chelsea where competition for places is fierce.
Emmanuel Petit said “It’s important for these young players to take their opportunities, especially at Chelsea. It makes the senior players check themselves, or their spots in the XI could be in danger.”
Petit also criticized Chelsea’s over-reliance on Cole Palmer, stating that a team cannot depend on a single player to win the biggest prizes.
Emmanuel Petit said “They rely too much on Cole Palmer. You cannot be dependent on one player if you want to win the biggest prizes.”
According to football.london, Chelsea’s plan is to assess Santos’ situation at the end of the season. The club had initially planned to loan him out for the 2025/26 season and then decide whether to keep him at Stamford Bridge.
