David Hirst struck 10 minutes from time to kill off Southampton and seal Wednesday’s first win of the season. They had missed a hatful of chances before finally breaking the deadlock with a John Sheridan penalty midway through the second half.
And Hirst, back after a three-match, absence following an Achilles problem, had the last word when he finished off a Graham Hyde cross. A sweeping move upfield started by Waddle finished with Sheridan cracking a low shot against the foot of the post.
Wednesday continued to waste opportunities after the interval with Sheridan and Hirst the main culprits. Sinton caught out Flower with a surging run into the box which ended abruptly when full-back Jeff Kenna brought him down, and Sheridan tucked the 58th-minute penalty away.
