Alan Kernaghan was set to face a baptism of fire on his debut for Manchester City against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. But the Irish defender, who was manager Brian Horton’s first signing as the Sky Blues’ boss said he wasn’t worried about the Dons striker. He also admitted that his move to the premier league would also enhance his chances of going to the world cup with Ireland.

Alan Kernaghan said “I don’t fear John Fashanu. Although Fash is a real handful in certain ways I’ve had to look after plenty of strikers who are just as much of a test in other ways. He’s big and strong and I will know I have been in a battle once it is over. I’ve got age on my side, but you can never rest on your laurels. Even though I’ve been voted man of the match in the last two World cup games in Dublin, I always felt that I needed Premier league football to help my world cup chances.”
