Manchester City announced the previous day that they had appointed Oxford United boss Brian Horton as their new manager. Horton, who was likely to sign a three-year contract with the Maine Road club had brought David Moss with him from Oxford as his assistant.
The two men were in attendance at Maine Road to watch City draw 1-1 with Coventry after which news of the appointment was made. City’s new general manager John Maddock, who sacked player-boss Peter Reid earlier in the week broke the news.
John Maddock said “The board considered a lot of names, we had a lot of applications but we decidd to go for a proffessionals’ professional. A lot of attractive names went for the job but we felt we would end up in protracted negotiations and we didn’t want to enter that field, we wanted a quick and clinical decision.”
