Today premier league fans were talking about Terry Phelan who at age of 25, became the most expensive full-back when he moved from Wimbledon to Manchester City for £2.5 Million.

Phelan, a Manchester United supporter as a boy, was not sure then whether he wanted to wear the light-blue of City so opted to begin his career at Leeds. They in turn released him a year later on a free transfer to Swansea. Manchester City paid the same price to Wimbledon an year before to make Keith Curie the most expensive defender in the domestic game.

Crystal Palace boss Steve Coppell had initially agreed to meet Wimbledon’s valuation but eventually Phelan’s desire for a return to his home city proved insurmountable for Palace. Phelan baulked on a move from Wimbledon to neighbouring Crystal Palace  stating “That would not have been right from me, I wanted a move away from Wimbledon. I had enjoyed five excellent years there but the fire in my belly had gone out. Joining Palace would not have got me away because the clubs share the same ground. It would have been like going through the back door at Wimbledon.”

He was expected to go straight into action at Maine Road against early league table toppers –  Norwich City.

Tuesday football occurred with a game between Leeds and  Tottenham Hotspurs where spurs were hammered 5 – 0 by Howard Wilkinson’s men. All the goals had Eric Cantona play a part as the French international showed power, precision and deadly accuracy to score a brilliant hat-trick that put champions Leeds back on the rails and left shell-shocked Tottenham still without a Premier League win. Cantona ruthlessly exposed Peter Shreeves’s defensive limitations as Leeds bounced back from their shock 4-I defeat at Middlesbrough to re-establish their reputation.

Below were other games which happened on this date –

Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1
Everton 1 Aston Villa 0
Ipswich Town 2 Liverpool 2
Leeds United 5 Tottenham Hotspur 0
