While we covered emphatic win by Leeds over Spurs in yesterday’s blog, Wednesday’s papers brought up an interesting topic which is discussed till date and still not found an answer yet. Crystal Palace manager Steve Coppell called for a ban on transfers during English Premier League playing season ( sounds familiar ). Coppell’s outburst followed confusion surrounding his club captain Geoff Thomas, whose transfer to Blackburn Rovers was eventually called off after several days of uncertainty. On the’opening day of the season, Thomas was in the farcical position of playing for Palace against Rovers, but premier league fans and players were wondering if he  may be swapping shirts couple of days later.

Coppell said “I have always thought that mid-season transfers were an unfair and undesirable part of the game, and the same goes for the loan system. This can allow clubs to gain an unfair advantage in the battle for titles or to avoid relegation. I have no objection to any amount of transfer activity in the close season, but once the season has started, I see no reason why a team should not sink or swim with what they have. Fans would then not be confused by seeing the identity of their team changing during the season, and it would certainly be fairer on the clubs with the least resources. The system works well enough in other countries, notably Italy and, let’s face it, the Italians are not exactly shy when it comes to spending money on players.”

In another off the field news, Mark Nile was charged by FA with misconduct after allegations that he “manhandled” a linesman at the end of the 2-I defeat by Coventry on the opening day of the Premier League season. The incident was reported by linesman lriah Rennie to referee Howard King. who reported it to the FA. Middlesbrough’s chief executive Keith Lamb expressed surprise there was a charge because it was a something and nothing situation.
