1992-93 was a nightmare season for the “other club” in Manchester. They had to endure the Red half of the Manchester lift the premier league and suffered a terrible season of their own. Peter Reid had done a great job in his three years as a player-manager and had instilled an attacking philosophy at the club.

But crowd trouble, ageing squad and bitter rivals lifting the championship broke the patience barrier for Citizens. They revolted against the club management and that resulted in a summer of heavy spending at Maine Road. Alan Kernaghan came in from Middlesbrough along with David Rocastle from Leeds and Uwe Rosler from Germany. Manchester City spent close to £7 million on nine new players without letting any first-team player go.
