Arsenal were the favourites to win the inaugural premier league under George Graham. But the change in the back pass rule had affected them the most along with Liverpool and they could not recover from the early season setbacks to finish 10th in the table. But they compensated a poor league showing by winning two domestic cups in the FA cup and the league cup. Interestingly, they beat Sheffield Wednesday in both the finals by the same margin, 2-1.
Their transfer activity was limited in that summer with only Eddie McGoldrick coming in from the relegated Crystal Palace and only first-team player leaving the Highbury was David O’Leary who called it quits to a two-decade-old Arsenal career to join Leeds.
