Nottingham Forest chairman Fred Reacher had pleaded with rebel director Chris Wootton to quit – and save the club further embarrassment. Reached wanted an end to the affair so that the rudderless club can begin planning the planning for life outside of the premier league and without Brian Clough.

Brian Clough had decided to step away from the managerial position but threatened that he wouldn’t do so and scrap his decision if Wootton was not removed by the board following alleged dirty tricks by Wootton to have the long-serving manager removed.

Wootton refused a request from the Forest board to resign at the beginning of that week when directors had met to discuss the appointment of Clough’s successor.
