John Aldridge who had won the English first division and the FA Cup with Liverpool in 1987 felt that football becoming a young men’s game was a myth and pointed out the fact that players playing abroad looked after themselves better and could play longer as a result. Aldridge had moved to Real Sociedad before moving back to Tranmere Rovers who were on the verge of getting promoted in the premier league.
John Aldridge said “It is a myth, look at Kevin Moran, he’s 37 and playing like 21. Ray Wilkins, Glen Hoddle, Trevor Francis are all playing. Funnily enough, all of them played abroad. Going abroad has a lot going for it. You train better, you eat better and you learn to adapt. When I was at Liverpool, I read a book called Eat to Win and it learned me an awful lot. You are what your body is, it’s like a car, you put better petrol, it will run nicer.”
