Just days after Ronnie Whelan threatened that he would not wait around for Liverpool to offer him a better deal to stay at Anfield for the following season, the club had reportedly offered him a new two-year extension on better terms to keep him at the club till 1995.
The popular Irishman, whose deal was set to expire in June that year wanted a more than one year contract on better terms which the club was unwilling to offer till that point. Apparently the new offer that Liverpool had made was off an offer that would be of two years but the second year would be contingent on the number of appearances he would make in the first year.
Whelan had already fixed a date for his testimonial against Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle which was set to take place at Anfield just five days prior to the start of the next season.
