Gordon Cowans was aiming to put a dent in Villa’s premier league title bandwagon, despite the fact that it may hit him in the pocket. Cowans had played 13 years at Villa park and his testimonial for his old club was set for at the end of the season. If Villa won the premier league, the stadium was likely to be full but if his new team Blackburn stops Villa in their ranks, it was likely that the gate receipts for Cowans’ testimonial may be impacted.

Gordon Cowans said “There would be a bumper gate for my testimonial if Villa won the championship. But my loyalties now are with Blackburn. With Norwich losing last night, we have a chance to finish third and that’s our target. Whatever happens tomorrow, I hope they win the title. Ron Atkinson has built a hell of a side.”
