Oldham manager Joe Royle still believed that his side could escape relegation by winning two of their remaining three matches. Royle, whose side were third from bottom of the premier league with 40 points, thought that 46 or 47 points was a realistic safety target.

Joe Royle said “The situation at the bottom is changing all the time because we all keep losing. Before we were talking about 50 or 52 points as the target but with the table the way it is 46 or47 may not be far off. There is such a fine line in this division now – it can be either Nottingham Forest or us. We’ve got three games left, two of which are at home. Its going to be very close but we could do it.”
