Mohamed Elyounoussi

#PLStories- Moi Elyounoussi reveals excitement to play tough friendly against teams like RB Leipzig #SAINTSFC

MOI Elyounoussi insisted Saints performed well “against a good team” but will have learned “things we can do better” in a 3-1 defeat to RB Leipzig. The Norwegian international started and played the first 60 minutes for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, before the Austrian made 10 changes to his outfield setup. It was not until the 10 substitutions had been made that Saints made their breakthrough, through Adam Armstrong, but it was important minutes for Elyounoussi alongside Nathan Tella and new signing Joe Aribo. Giving his verdict to the club website after the match, Elyounoussi said: “It was good from the boys, for everyone to get some minutes. “We’ve been working on some patterns offensively, defensively as well and it was a good test against a good team who definitely tested some of the things we’re working on, so in the end, a good 60 minutes in the tank. “I think we did a good game, against a good team, and for sure some tips we’re going to look at, things we can do better, things we can improve on and things we did well but can improve on as well. In the end, the boys liked it, a good challenge, and for the boys who came on it was a good 45-60 minutes.” After defeat to the Champions League regulars, Saints are set to face Austrian Bundesliga side SKA Klagenfurt to end their trip abroad on Monday, July 18. “You can train as much as you want but you need to get it on the pitch against an opposition that can challenge you with the things you’ve been working on so that’s a good thing,” Elyounoussi added. “We have a lot of good opponents we’re going to play against that will challenge the things we’re working on. We’re looking forward to the next one, so far, so good.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl explains James Ward-Prowse absence #SAINTSFC

SAINTS captain James Ward-Prowse missed the first match of pre-season after picking up a knock in training, but Ralph Hasenhuttl reassured supporters “it’s nothing serious”. The 27-year-old England international is a mainstay in the St Mary’s side and made 42 appearances across all competitions last campaign. His performances, including a personal best 10 goals in the Premier League season alone, have led to continued transfer interest from rivals in the division. Ward-Prowse travelled with the Saints group for the Austria trip on Wednesday, set to play two games that began with a 3-1 defeat to German outfit RB Leipzig. However, some supporters feared the worst when the skipper was not part of the squad that lined up to face the Champions League contenders at Lavanttal Arena. “It’s nothing serious,” manager Hasenhuttl explained to Hampshire Live, on his captain’s absence. “But, in the end, we have what we have. “We don’t have to ask any risks with James so we decided to leave him at home. We know what we get from him.” The Austrian continued: “Absolutely it was the right thing to do (leaving him out). “Last season in pre-season we had the same situation where he was also out with a knee injury. So this time it was good for us to try and test something different without him.” The skipper could return to face Austrian Bundesliga SKA Klagenfurt on Monday, in the final match before Saints head back to England on Wednesday. However, Hasenhuttl may opt to rest him fully – with further pre-season fixtures coming versus Watford, Monaco and Villareal, before the Premier League returns. On his future, after links to the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and West Ham, Ward-Prowse told the Daily Echo earlier this year: “My commitment stems from the training ground and my love for playing football. “That is ultimately what has got me here and that will never, ever change. My passion and love for what I do. “Making sure I enjoy every moment I’m out on the pitch. That is the way that I show my commitment and I’ll continue to do so.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. Mohamed Elyounoussi

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl confirms Mohammed Elyounoussi planning to remain with Southampton on long term #SAINTSFC

SAINTS attacker Mohamed Elyounoussi is closing in on a new “long-term” contract to keep him at Southampton for the foreseeable future, sources have told the Daily Echo. The Norwegian international has just 12 months left on his current deal but talks between his representatives and the club have ramped up in recent weeks and both sides are understood to be confident a positive resolution will arrive soon.  It is believed the contract will be for three to four years, with the exact length one of the details that still needs finalising.  READ MORE: What Saints fans can expect from wonderkid Romeo Lavia There is confidence on all sides though that it is just a matter of time before the extension is sealed. It’s understood that Southampton see Elyounoussi as a crucial member of Ralph Hasenhuttl's squad while the player himself feels valued and would like to continue his career on the South Coast.  Elyounoussi joined Southampton in the summer of 2018 for a fee of around £16m but he made just 16 league appearances in his maiden campaign before departing for Celtic on loan. Flashes of his talent in Scotland saw that temporary stay extended for another year before the 27-year-old returned to St Mary’s last summer. After sitting on the bench for the first two games of the season, Elyounoussi started in the third at Newcastle and became a near ever-present in Hasenhuttl's side after that. He ended the campaign with 33 appearances in all competitions, including 16 in his side’s final 17 matches. Elyounoussi in action for Saints this season. Image by: Stuart Martin Four goals and two assists is not the most enthralling return from all those minutes but it’s clear Hasenhuttl sees Elyounoussi as a crucial component of his squad. A hard-worker and capable of moving inside when Saints’ marauding full-backs fly up the wing, the Moroccan-born forward should continue to have a sizable role heading into the new season. “I think this loan time definitely helped him to make the next step in his development,” Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo in February. “It was important for him to get game time there (at Celtic) – it was always a problem here in the beginning. “It is always tough when you are coming into a new team, then the team is not performing well and you are a little bit under the radar and don’t get a chance to play a lot. “So, I think he needed this time and we were always following him, looking how he developed his game and it was for me, in the summer, a very clear decision to say ‘I want him back in this team’. READ MORE: No Saints bid for Broja despite reports “Immediately in the pre-season I saw he could give me a lot, what I want to have in this position. He is a smart player, he can score goals, he is running a lot, covers a lot of distance and is disciplined in the defence. “He is a quick learner and he learned to be more resilient in the Premier League. This is what you have to be, because it’s tough – it is physically a tough league. When you learn to do this, then the package is a good one and I think meanwhile, he showed he is a good package.” "I've always said I thrive in Southampton, it's a fantastic club,” Elyounoussi told Norwegian outlet TV2 last month.  “The family thrives well. We'll see what we land on.” Set to turn 28 before the start of the 2022/23 season, a three/four year contract would keep Elyounoussi at the club past his 30th birthday.  Recently on international duty with Norway, Elyounoussi joined his Saints teammates at Staplewood this week for pre-season preperations ahead of their upcoming trip to Austria. With just under a month until Southampton travel to North London to face Tottenham in the opening game of the season, the club have been busy reinforcing the squad that limped to the finish line last spring. Thus far Gavin Bazunu, Mateusz Lis, Armel Bela-Kotchap and Romeo Lavia have signed while a deal for Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo is believed to be close. Moussa Djenepo, Theo Walcott and Nathan Redmond could all still depart should suitable permanent or loan moves be found but Elyounoussi is set to stay with a new deal reinforcing his and the club's commitment to each other. Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Southampton sign young Manchester City midfielder Romeo Lavia #MCFC #SAINTSFC

SAINTS have completed the signing of Manchester City midfielder Romeo Lavia on a five-year-deal, becoming the fourth arrival of the summer for a reported inital fee of £10.5 million. The 18-year-old Belgium youth international is a natural ball-winner and will provide manager Ralph Hasenhuttl further competition and rotation for James Ward-Prowse and Oriol Romeu. Lavia had a rapid rise at Man City since his arrival from Anderlecht in summer 2020, winning the under-23s player of the season in his first campaign – just 17-years-old. Pep Guardiola gave the youngster senior debuts in both the EFL Cup and FA Cup last season, while he was a regular for the Cityzens in the UEFA Youth League. READ MORE: After signing his deal and completing a move to Staplewood, Lavia said: “I’m really delighted to join this club. "I think this club has a really good culture with young players, so I’m really happy to be here. “When I heard of the interest of Southampton I was buzzing because there’s an opportunity for young players to develop as much as possible and I’m very excited.” Lavia is the second signing from Pep Guardiola’s Citizens, following 20-year-old goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu – who was the first player in at Staplewood Campus last month. Since then, Saints have also announced 25-year-old Polish shot-stopper Mateusz Lis and 20-year-old defender Armel Bella-Kotchap. Lavia continues Sport Republic’s policy of recruiting the best available youngsters from across the country, and giving them their first Premier League steps. On his new addition, Hasenhuttl added: “Roméo is an extremely talented young player at the start of his career who is open-minded and wants to learn and develop his game with us. “We are very excited to sign him ahead of many other interested clubs. It proves that we have a positive reputation for improving young players, which we have worked hard to build up over the years. “Roméo is coming from one of the best teams in the world, learning from the best manager and the best players. Now it is up to him to show us why he deserves to play in the Premier League, as we hope to help take his game to the next level.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. Wout Weghorst

#PLStories- Burnley and Holland striker Wout Weghorst recalls special time on loan at Turf Moore #BURNLEYFC

Wout Weghorst says his time at Turf Moor has been “special” and hasn’t ruled out playing for Burnley again. The forward joined the Clarets from Wolfsburg for a reported £12million fee back in January, scoring two goals in 20 appearances as the club was relegated from the Premier League. The 29-year-old has now joined Turkish outfit Besiktas on a season-long loan as he aims to make the Holland squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. “I had my thoughts already before I moved to Burnley half a year ago. Of course, we spoke about it,” Weghorst told the club’s Twitter page. “The World Cup is coming up now and that is really important for me, I think it is my biggest dream. It is the biggest (thing) you can achieve as a professional football player. “We have got a trainer (Louis van Gaal) who has clear thoughts about it and playing at the highest level. He is really strict about it so if I want to be there, I had to make the decision.” Despite suffering relegation, Weghorst says he made memories at Turf Moor that “will always have a place in my heart”. The Dutch international refused to rule out the possibility of playing for the Clarets again after his loan spell. He added: “The Burnley fans at Turf Moor, they actually made my dream in England, my Premier League dream. The club and especially the fans, they made it that special. “The songs they sung for me and the moments we shared, it is something which I will always keep in my mind and will always have a place in my heart. “Don’t get me wrong, it is absolutely not that I am feeling too good for the Championship or that I don’t want to play in the Championship with Burnley. “From my side, there are some reasons for it and I spoke with the club before I came. We had our discussions about it, our vision and thoughts. “There could be a return from my side and we could have more positive and successful moments together. I am looking forward to that moment.”
Dale Stephens

#PLStories- Dale Stephens says he is ‘lucky’ to be training at Brighton #BHAFC

Dale Stephens will train with Albion until the end of the week as he looks for a new club. The former Seagulls midfielder says he is lucky to have the chance to work at Lancing. Pre-season training continues this week before Albion start their friendly fixtures against Union St-Gilloise on Saturday. Stephens, who was released by Burnley at the end of last season, said: “It’s trying to find the right fit. “I had a difficult couple of years not playing many minutes. “I think the main focus is trying to get as many games as possible over the next couple of years. “All last week or so I’ve been okay. “A lot of lads are in the same position. “The closer it gets to the start of the season, which is obviously the end of the month in the Championship, it’s obviously going to play on your nerves a little bit more. “At the moment, I think I’m in a good enough position where I’ve been lucky enough to go down to Brighton and train last week. “I’m due to do that this week up until Friday so I know I’m doing as much as I can in the meantime. “I can imagine in a couple of weeks’ time it will be more edgy, I think.”   📱 “I actually found out I’d been released on Twitter…”❌ “It’s bizarre. There wasn’t dialogue, but it was a clean break.”Dale Stephens reveals how he found out he’d been released by Burnley pic.twitter.com/2UMb6mPVeX — talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) July 3, 2022 Stephens revealed he knew Burnley would let him go - but confirmation only came when he saw the news on Twitter. He worked alone on his fitness while on holiday in Greece. Speaking to TalkSPORT, he added: “I’m in the best position at the moment in that I’m getting touches of the ball and the physical output. “The technical stuff I probably wouldn’t get if I was training on my own.”
Vincent Kompany

#PLStories- Burnley manager Vincent Company signs Taylor Harwood-Bellis on loan from Manchester City #BURNELYFC #MCFC

Burnley have completed the signing of Taylor Harwood-Bellis on a season-long loan from Manchester City. The 20-year-old joined City at the age of eight and has made eight first-team appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side. Harwood-Bellis played under Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht during the first half of last season and also had a spell at Stoke. He is the Clarets’ third defensive recruit this summer following the arrivals of Luke McNally and CJ Egan-Riley. “I’m buzzing with it. I obviously knew about it for a while, so I’m happy to get it all done - all the medical stuff done - and to get it all sorted,” said the defender. “I feel like this will hopefully be the best season that I’ll have in the Championship with all the experience I’ve got and I’m looking forward to a good season. Hopefully it’s one with lots of success." Harwood-Bellis has also represented England from Under-16 to Under-21 level and even captained the U21 side. Kompany added: "I am looking forward to working with Taylor once again, and I know first-hand the qualities he will bring to the group. "Taylor is a fantastic player and leader with a tremendous mentality that fits within our culture, and he knows exactly what the Championship is all about. “We would like to thank Manchester City for allowing Taylor to join us on loan for the upcoming season." #PLStories- Southampton goalkeeper Willy Caballero signs new one-year contract #SAINTSFC

#PLStories- Southampton goalkeeper Willy Caballero signs new one-year contract #SAINTSFC

SAINTS goalkeeper Willy Caballero has signed a one-year extension to remain with the club for the upcoming 2022-23 season.  The former Chelsea and Manchester City stopper turns 41 in September, but will likely act as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s third or fourth choice.  Alex McCarthy and summer signing Gavin Bazunu will tussle for the number one shirt, while Caballero acts as back-up and offers his experience and mentality to the group.  He will continue to work alongside goalkeeping coach Andrew Sparkes, who is part of a seven-man coaching including manager Hasenhuttl. On signing his deal, Caballero said: "The feeling is to be ambitious, to be part of this team, to create a really great atmosphere here, to convince myself and to convince the players that we can do something together – something nice, something big. “If I am thinking just that I can help them grow, it would be a comfortable situation. But I am here to compete with everyone, as I have done in the past and as I have done from the first day, because that is my way to train and feel football.” Mateusz Lis, who also arrived at St Mary’s this summer, could potentially go out on loan – acting as a ready-made replacement for Caballero at the end of next campaign.  Caballero signed for Saints initially as emergency cover while both McCarthy and new Tottenham Hotspur keeper Fraser Forster were unavailable for Hasenhuttl in December.  The Argentine impressed during his one-month stint, and earned a contract to the end of the season. Saints then revealed, in the retained list, that negotiations were under way for another new Caballero deal.  After confirming his stay, Hasenhuttl added: “Willy proved to be a valuable addition to our goalkeeper group last season, both on the pitch in the matches that he played and on the training ground, where his experience is massive for us and the other goalkeepers. “He is an amazing guy who brings a lot of personality to the dressing room, and we are very happy he has decided to stay with us for another year.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. Vincent Kompany

#PLStories- Vincent Kompany on what he learned from Pep Guardiola and ‘unbelievable’ culture at Burnley #BURNLEYFC #MCFC

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany says it is “massive" to have Jack Cork tied down as the club prepares for a new chapter. The midfielder, who has made more than 200 appearances during two spells at Turf Moor, put pen to paper over a new two-year contract. Kompany is delighted Cork will be sticking around after losing Ben Mee, James Tarkowski and Nick Pope among others following relegation from the top-flight. “That was massive for me,” he said. “I don’t know how much it has been put forward but I can tell you that the culture that has been built here over the years, and I have to give credit to Sean (Dyche) and all the people who have worked in this building with him. “The culture in this club is unbelievable and I would rather start with that every day of the week than with a talented team with the opposite personalities. “We have got a good starting point and that is not going to change. If anything, if I can sharpen it even more I will do so. I want to protect that and that will be at the centre of everything.” Kompany is also keen to have former Liverpool and Wales wide man Craig Bellamy alongside him in the dugout. Bellamy played alongside Kompany at Manchester City and also had a spell working alongside him in Belgium. The Burnley chief added: “He’s one of the rumours that were actually correct, after the pics got out. “He’s someone I have huge respect for. He’s incredibly gifted and he’s a typical misunderstood guy who gives so much. If I can have him with me, I will.” Kompany won four Premier League titles during his time at the Etihad, two of them coming under the guidance of Pep Guardiola. When asked what he had learned from his former boss, the Belgian said: “I met this fantastic coach, the best in the world and the simple thing I took from him was, not a style of football, but that he was the very best at telling his players why they were doing things on the pitch."
