Lewis Dunk Brighton

#PLStories- Brighton captain Lewis Dunk aiming for strong end to season and get all of 9 remaining points #BHAFC

LEWIS DUNK believes that his teammates are aiming for a strong end to the season. The 3-0 thrashing of Wolves on Saturday saw Albion set their new record for Premier League points collected in a single season (44) and it could get even better for the club as there are still three more games to be played. Dunk thinks that the players are keen to make the most of their position which has been made possible after winning 11 points out of 18 in April. The captain told BHAFC: “We’re in a good place at the moment and we want to keep it going right up until the last game – a top-ten finish is definitely something to aim for. “We’ve got some tough games left but there are nine points to play for and we're looking for nine points. “We enjoyed the win over Wolves but it’s back to preparing for Manchester United at the Amex on Saturday. “Let’s take each game on its own and see where we finish up.” The defender was also full of praise for one of the club's “best performances” of the season against Wolves. He said: “We really controlled the game and it was one of our best performances of the season. “We’ve done that quite a few times this season but this time we got the goals as well, so it was a lot less stressful at the end. “But as a defender I also wanted a clean sheet, so it was nice at the end when their shot hit the post. “We set high standards in games and in training and we’ll continue to do so for the last three games.” After Saturday’s Amex date with United, Albion face two sides that they have never lost Premier League games to. The first is an away fixture against relegation threatened Leeds before the season finale at the Amex against West Ham on May 22.
Jay Rodriguez Burnley

#PLStories- Burnley forward Jay Rodriguez signs new two-year deal at Turf Moor #BURNLEYFC

Rodriguez came through the Clarets' youth ranks and rejoined the club in the summer of 2019. The 32-year-old has scored seven goals this season including an important equaliser against Manchester United. “A big thing that’s stood out for me since I’ve been here is the togetherness of the group and how we work for each other," he told the club's website. "We’re all humble and down to earth. You look at the squad and you know you’re going to work extremely hard. “Togetherness is definitely something you notice with the Burnley fans - they are always with you. "They can see you working hard on the pitch, and they’ll be behind you no matter what. “I’ve made many memories so far and hopefully I can make some more soon. "You’ve always got to keep improving in football and make as many memories as you can.” Rodriguez says signing a new deal was "a no brainer" and is excited for the future.  He added: “The club means a lot to me. Having grown up in the area, it is always a pleasure and a privilege to represent Burnley. "So when the club offered the contract, it was a no brainer for me. I couldn’t wait to sign it. “To play for Burnley being a Burnley lad is extra special. To see where the club has come and where it’s at now, I just wanted to be a part of that and I can’t wait for the next chapter at the club.” Clarets on social, plus take out a subscription... Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl says English schedule ‘a little strange’ after midweek fixture reschedule due to FA Cup #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl admitted the English football schedule “is a little strange” as Saints will now play their final home game of the season midweek due to the FA Cup final. They had been due to host title-challengers Liverpool on Saturday, May 14, but that match has been moved due to the Reds’ qualification for the domestic cup final that same weekend. They will face Chelsea at Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup, and will now visit St Mary’s for Saints’ final home match of the season on a rearranged date of Tuesday, May 17. It is a disappointment for some supporters, who may not be able to make the match due to work or travel commitments but would have otherwise attended on the weekend. “As long as you have the FA Cup blocking game weekends from the Premier League, it will always end up like this that you have an end of season game during the week,” Hasenhuttl said. “It is unique from European leagues, I have not known it before like this. The Premier League sometimes also struggle finding dates for the games so it is not so easy. “I have heard in the past that teams end up with four games in the last week so this is a little bit strange. But if you want to have two cup competitions then it will end up like this, English football wants to see us more often.” The Austrian continued: “It is amazing, I must say, what teams like Liverpool and Man City are doing, you see the games where players are being substituted in the 70th minute when the game is decided and they look like they don’t understand it. “It shows how much they want to play every game and how fit they must be. This is amazing for me, but you as a manager have to take care of them because nobody else does it. “It is amazing what they do, they perform on the highest level and this challenge is one of the characteristics of English football what everybody loves.” Saints have just three matches left of the 2021-22 season, with Premier League visits to Brentford and Leicester City sandwiching the Kop clash. #PLStories- Interim boss Mike Jackson ‘a little embarrassed’ at praise for Burnley revival #BURNLEYFC

BURNLEY interim boss Mike Jackson said he felt “a little embarrassed” at being thrust into the spotlight as the Clarets’ revival continued with a 2-1 comeback win at Watford. Saturday’s triumph at Vicarage Road lifted the north-west club five points clear of the Premier League’s bottom three and all but relegated the Hornets, who sit 12 points from safety with four games to go. An early own-goal from James Tarkowski had provided a glimmer of hope for the hosts but Burnley equalised through Jack Cork in the 83rd minute and Josh Brownhill’s strike completed the turnaround three minutes later. The result meant the Clarets have now picked up 10 points from four games since sacking Sean Dyche on April 15, leading to much praise for interim boss Jackson, but he insisted he was not in the job for the plaudits. “I’m not one for the limelight,” he said. “I try to keep low key and just do what I’m doing – stick with the group, keep them honest. I don’t look at it like that (getting plaudits).” “I know that’s what’s happening but sometimes it probably makes me feel a little embarrassed for myself.” Jackson explained that Tarkowski, who captained the side in the absence of Ben Mee, had only joined up with the squad on the morning of the match for family reasons. “We were down in the hotel (on Friday night). He got picked up, got driven straight down, put on the bus and straight in the game,” Jackson said. “That’s his character – what he’s done to get himself here and ready to play. That typifies what he is, what sort of leader he is. For the lads to see him, they knew what had happened, credit to him.” Clarets on social, plus take out a subscription... Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl’s gives scathing Southampton assessment after loss against Crystal Palace #SAINTSFC #CPFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl declared “maybe we are not good enough” after Saints all-but buried their top-half ambitions with a late 2-1 defeat to mid-table challengers Crystal Palace. Substitute Wilfried Zaha struck in added time after Oriol Romeu and Eberechi Eze goals had cancelled each other out earlier in each half. The result sees Saints drop to 15th in the Premier League with just three matches to go – three points behind the top 10, but with others boasting games in hand. Hasenhuttl delivered a scathing assessment of his side after a dull and disappointing display in the penultimate home contest of the season. “You can see how we conceded the first goal, how easy we give it away,” Hasenhuttl said. “We are in some positions at the moment lacking quality, this is not only for the players who have started but also for the players that are coming on. “They are far away from the level they have shown and this is the reason why we are not good enough to play what we have shown.” He continued: “It’s not bad if you have something like that (Zaha as a substitute), I must say I expect more from my guys coming on. "This is what we are lacking at the moment, Broja is not the same like he has been a few months ago. This is the difference at the moment. "It is very hard to take but this is the realistic thing that we are always coming into this situation that we can make this up and we fail. Maybe there is a reason for that, and maybe because we are not good enough.” The Ivorian international snatched three points from St Mary’s with time running out in the contest, despite receiving the ball with back to goal and a defensive line behind him. A slight touch off Mohammed Salisu helped guide the ball low beyond Fraser Forster, but Hasenhuttl lamented how the situation became a threat in the first place. “We haven’t been exposed, we had fresh players on the pitch and we had a situation where a guy gets the ball around the box with four players around him and can still turn and shoot into the corner,” Hasenhuttl said. “For me, this is not really a goal situation. Not something where I think, ‘this is getting dangerous’, and we concede a goal. “I can speak about everything, the shape – the key is that we hardly win games when you concede two goals and that is a fact, and what is different from other home wins this season.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. #PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl insists Crystal Palace were ‘not really that good’ after winning against Southampton #SAINTSFC #CPFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl admitted frustration that “the opponent was not really that good today” yet Saints still slipped to a 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace. Oriol Romeu headed Saints into an early lead but a second-half goal by Eberechi Eze presented substitute Wilfried Zaha with the chance to net the winner in added time. It was a flat contest but Palace were the team that looked like threatening following the interval, with Stuart Armstrong the only Saints player who had an opportunity to score – blazing over in the final 10 minutes. The visitors registered 61 per cent possession, six more shots and an additional corner to Saints. However, Hasenhuttl felt the match was there for the taking. “I think we didn’t see a very good game today,” he said, speaking after the match. “Two teams who haven’t played on their highest level. “The little better one, if you want the team with a little better subs today, made the difference. For us, a very disappointing day because we had a big chance after a good start but couldn’t hold the level. “The level is a bit much to say, there wasn’t much of a level to this game, but by the end you can still win it and this is the most disappointing part.” Hasenhuttl continued: “We have full knowledge that we can play much better football than we are doing at the moment, we have shown that this season. “Also the opponent was not really that good today but at the moment all teams are looking for results and we couldn’t manage it today, it’s not nice to watch and this is the disappointing thing for me.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. #PLStories- Burnley interim boss Mike Jackson credits confidence for Watford victory #BURNLEYFC

INTERIM Burnley boss Mike Jackson insisted there has been “no magic wand” after his side’s impressive climb up the table continued with a 2-1 comeback victory at Watford. The Clarets’ fightback lifted the club five points clear of the bottom three and all-but relegated their opponents, who sit 12 points from safety with four games to go. The result confirmed Norwich’s relegation. An own goal from James Tarkowski had provided a glimmer of hope for the Hornets but Burnley found a late leveller, with Jack Cork heading in an 83rd-minute equaliser before Josh Brownhill’s strike completed the turnaround for the visitors. Burnley have now won three games in a row and Jackson insisted he has not done anything special to secure those victories. “I would say that (it’s just about confidence),” Jackson said. “I’d say you get those results, you get that more belief, a bit more feeling about yourself and the group starts to come together, they know what’s at stake and obviously everything builds with that. “There’s been no magic wand whatsoever, it’s just reminding the players who they are and making sure they stick together as a group, stay honest, look after each other and that’s the way we try to do it.” Since parting company with Sean Dyche Burnley’s turnaround has been remarkable, with the Clarets taking 10 points from four games. Jackson credits his side’s togetherness for their fight from 1-0 down to winning 2-1. He added: “I think you can see obviously you get the first goal and the second goal as well and it’s just mayhem, but that’s this group, that’s what they do – people give them criticism for other things but what you can never criticise them for is that team spirit and that togetherness which means a lot.”
Graham Potter Brighton

#PLStories- Graham Potter heaps praises on Robert Sanchez as he rivals Alisson in key stat #BHAFC

Albion have been praised for standing strong in defence during a season of upheaval. Robert Sanchez has earned particular credit in a campaign which has seen various defenders suffer significant absences or leave the club altogether. Only four teams have conceded fewer away goals than the Seagulls, who visit Wolves tomorrow (3pm). Albion have nine clean sheets so far this season with four games to go. Head coach Graham Potter said: “That has been one of the things I’ve been most pleased with, that despite the fact we’ve got key defensive players missing, we’ve managed to perform well as a defensive unit and that’s another factor that makes it harder for Rob. “If you speak to most goalkeepers, they will want consistency ahead of them. “They want that stability and I understand, it’s all those things, he has not been able to have that for different reasons. “It’s credit to him he has still managed to help us with points. “I saw a stat the other day that he’s only behind Alisson (Becker of Liverpool) in one-v-one saves in the league. “He has helped us keep clean sheets. “He’s a young goalkeeper who, like us all, will make mistakes. “But generally his level is really good and he’s only going to get better.” IS IT TIME FOR BRIGHTON'S SHANE DUFFY TO MOVE ON Tariq Lamptey is likely to return to the matchday squad after missing the 2-2 draw with Southampton because of a minor knee injury. Lamptey trained yesterday and Albion were waiting to see whether he felt any adverse reaction. Potter will not be rotating his squad with mid-table safety pretty much secured. He said: “For me it’s pick our strongest team and try and compete for the three points, that’s the priority. “I think I’d be doing everybody a disservice if I wasn’t thinking that way.   Full #PremierLeague GK 1v1s ranking:As @Carra23 correctly said #Alisson is the 1v1 king! 👑#Sanchez & #Sa have been very impressive too🧤#Pickford, #Guaita, & #Krul have all struggled 😔The general standard of 1v1 GKing has been excellent this year vs previous years! 🔥 pic.twitter.com/Da6lbM2kt0 — John Harrison (@Jhdharrison1) April 26, 2022 “We have to pick the team that we think gives us the best chance of winning because every point in this league is important, so valuable. “The guys were competing in a really good training session today - everyone wants to play. “So you know that and then it’s just about picking what you think is the team that gives us the best chance.”
Shane Duffy

#PLStories- Brighton’s Shane Duffy set for talks on his future #BHAFC

Duffy has not played since the home defeat by Tottenham and has only made three Premier League starts since early December. That after an impressive start to the season when he appeared to have a new lease of life following his return from a miserable loan stint at Celtic. He is likely to be among the subs when the Seagulls go to Wolves tomorrow. Potter said: “Shane has been a really important member of the team this season. “And then, you have to say how well he has done for this football club all round. “We were all upset with how the year went for him at Celtic. “It was one of those things where on and off the pitch he struggled. “It was probably one of the toughest times of his life. “But he came back here and was a breath of fresh air, to be honest. “He was a credit to himself with how he handled everything. “He came into the side and helped us get points. “Since Christmas, however, it has not been as simple for him. “It has not been as strong a second half of the season as the first for lots of different reasons. “But he’s still a really important player for us, and a really important person in the group. “As for his future, I think it’s one of those things that we sit down and we speak at the end of the season. “He was really low when he came back and was probably thinking about where his career was going. “But I think he has proven to everybody that he can compete and play at this level. “For Shane as well he’s not getting any younger. So, it’s about how he can play as much football as he can. “With all the players you have to sit down with them and think what’s the best thing for him? “But he’s someone that we have a huge respect for. “He has been brilliant for me since I’ve been here. I love the big guy to death.” Potter said a decision would be taken jointly on what comes next for Duffy, who has a year left on his current contract. He said: “We just need to help people enjoy football because when that’s happening he’s a really important guy. It has to be a two-way discussion. “Shane is an experienced guy and he has got his career and everything to consider. “He’s ambitious. He wants to carry on playing for his country. That’s important for him. “So, all these things you have to take into consideration when you speak to players.” Duffy returned to the bench for the draw with Southampton last Sunday. Potter said: “He picked up something around the international break last time so he has only had a few training sessions. “He was probably ahead of schedule on the bench for us. “But Shane being Shane, we wanted him around the group, which says a lot about how important he is. “He will certainly be in the squad again.” “They have had a really good season.”

#PLStories- Southampton boss not given up hope of Armando Broja transfer #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl has not given up hope of keeping on-loan Armando Broja at St Mary’s next season, teasing “let’s have a look at what we do” and adding: “I know this would be good for him.” The 20-year-old Chelsea academy forward is set to return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the current campaign, when his season-long loan deal with Saints will expire. Already an Albanian international and goalscorer in the Dutch Eredivisie, Broja’s reputation has rocketed during his first full season as a Premier League player. Read more When it was suggested that Broja may not be at the club come August, Hasenhuttl quipped: “Let’s have a look what we do next season, it is interesting that you know everything about Armando Broja. We will have definitely a good young group next season, however it looks.” Armando Broja has a promising future at just 20-years-old (Pic: Stuart Martin) However, later asked if there was any progress on securing the Slough-born striker’s future, the Austrian responded: “At this moment it is not easy to negotiate with Chelsea. There is no question, and it is not surprising that I want him to stay here another year. I know this would be good for him.” Returning from Vitesse Arnhem, Broja featured for Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel during pre-season – scoring at AFC Bournemouth – before completing a loan deal with Saints down the road just over a week later. He has since scored six Premier League goals. However, only one of those has come since mid-January, in a 3-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur. That is his only goalscoring return in his last 13 Premier League matches, although he also propelled a rotated Saints side into the FA Cup quarter-final via a goal and winning a penalty versus West Ham in March. Armando Broja celebrates sealing a St Mary's win over West Ham (Pic: PA) “The interesting thing is that young players are not allowed to have, two, three or four bad games because it is not understandable,” Hasenhuttl said, of the young striker. “But it is understandable. After the first big impact he made in the league everybody knows him now and everybody is taking care of him. “It is much harder. I know this as a striker. If nobody knows you and does not know your strengths, then it is easier to compete. “It is completely normal that there comes a moment when you have a little bit of a setback. The important thing is that he starts working hard again and fighting to be dangerous up front.” Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl (Pic: Stuart Martin) He continued: “The more you do for the team, the more you invest, the earlier you get back to the situation where you get chances. “At the moment when he plays, the number of chances is going down. He needs to invest a little bit more in some moments. “Sometimes he must learn how to set his body. We have good examples of this in the team at the moment and they show this in an impressive way. “It is good for young players to have situations like this, to go through it. This was the reason he came to us, to learn and to get better. It has been a very important first season for him.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. #PLStories- Mohammed Salisu addresses mistakes, ‘great’ season and contract talk #SAINTSFC

WHEN Mohammed Salisu arrived in England, he came armed with a depth of language, aggressive patience, and self-awareness – a trio enough to make negligible the defender’s other shortcomings. The Ghanaian’s form this season was as such it was easy to forget he only just turned 23-years-old, playing a position of which experience is a premium commodity. It is then easy to forgive the lapse in form that has followed in the last eight weeks. Evidence of mental strength still to be developed, but not negating ability that we have all witnessed. Salisu can be a top Premier League centre-back – still leading the charts for interceptions (74) across the division, alongside partner Jan Bednarek (65) – but will have to find it within himself to make it happen. Read more “For me, in football mistakes come. When it comes, you have to stay positive and try to believe in yourself,” Salisu told the Daily Echo. Mohammed Salisu is enjoying his first season as a Premier League star (Pic: PA) “Try to sit down and see what’s not right so you can make it better. I had a couple of bad games, I will say. But I’m still working hard to get back to my best. “I’m doing Ramadan and it’s not easy. It’s very hard at the same time playing games, I think it’s a little bit affected me. But I’m still working hard and I will get back strong.” Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl had identified at the start of the season that Salisu’s main improvements had to come on the ball. By the end of September, the Austrian was already praising Salisu for the application shown – but, as the ugly defeat to Watford in March displayed, it is still by no means a finished article. “When I started I didn’t want to make things difficult, I tried to make things simple (with the ball) and then be stronger in defence,” Salisu admitted. The 23-year-old scored an unfortunate own goal last time out (Pic: PA) “I know it’s going to come as time goes on. Everything is going to come, the confidence is going to come. So I tried to make everything easy in the first games and focus on defending.” Salisu’s decline in form, seeing him left on the bench for Arsenal and Burnley this month, has coincided with the team’s, and for all but a few supremely dependable characters, every player on that team also. Saints have picked up just one win in eight Premier League matches since the shellshock of a 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa – which injured Salisu missed. A dominant Salisu was the benchmark for the start of the run proceeding that too, with a man-of-the-match performance during the 1-1 draw versus Manchester City. Five wins and a draw in six followed, across all competitions. Mohammed Salisu's game by numbers vs. Man City:◉ Most clearances (14)◉ Most tackles made (7)◉ Most interceptions (4)◉ Most shots blocked (3)◎ 9 duels won◎ 4 ball recoveries◎ 2 aerial duels won◎ 0 x dribbled past◎ 0 fouls committedIncredible. 🧱 pic.twitter.com/dOkva7EBUv — Squawka (@Squawka) January 22, 2022 “Great, I would say great,” Salisu insisted, reflecting on his first full season as a Saints regular. “Four games left, it’s not going to be easy. 🦂👑A masterclass from Mohammed Salisu ✨ pic.twitter.com/2VFmlAcwGi — Southampton FC (@SouthamptonFC) January 24, 2022 “We want to finish in a good place so we have to work hard every day and fight for every game to make sure we can. Mohammed Salisu celebrated his first goal in English football in the EFL Cup last year (Pic: PA) “It’s been nine games and we’ve only had one win. I think the fans are expecting to win this Saturday, so we’re going to give our best and fight for everything to get what we want.” Salisu, with 30 Premier League appearances, has played more league matches than any of his centre-back partners this season – Bednarek is closest, with 29. Jan Bednarek has scored four Premier League goals this campaign (Pic: PA) Until he picked up a hamstring tendon injury in September, Jack Stephens was his trusty partner in defence. Lyanco, who is still learning English, has played a bit-part role in his first season at St Mary’s. “I speak like four languages, it helps a lot,” Salisu revealed. “When I was coming to England, I speak English so I thought this was the right place for me because I can communicate with the players, I can talk with people outside. “We all know what we are doing and the manager knows what he wants. So everyone knows. When I’m with Jan, he knows exactly what he has to do, with Jack the same as well - and Lyanco, it’s just the communication but I speak a little bit of Spanish which really helps.” Salisu could have another new centre-back partner to play alongside following the summer transfer window, should Saints choose to shuffle the deck. Supporters hope the former Real Valladolid man’s individual future will be more settled. Under contract at Saints until 2024, it had been reported that situations with agents had been resolved and the club are now free to negotiate new terms. “I’m focusing on here. I’m trying to work hard, I need to focus on here now and the future is the future. It’s going to come but now I’m really focused on here,” Salisu declared, when asked about this possibility.
