#PLStories- Nathan Tella ‘looking forward’ to Southampton return amid uncertain future #SAINTSFC

The 24 year old scored 17 Championship goals and became a fan favourite in the process as the Clarets secured promotion back to the Premier League as title-winners. Saints academy graduate Tella, who signed from Arsenal as a teenager, now faces the prospect of returning to the second division with the soon-to-be-relegated St Mary’s side. Burnley retain an interest in the forward while he is enjoying his new life, living in the north of England. Any deal struck would, however, require a sizeable fee. He has been asked about his future and could not give a definitive answer, telling BBC Radio Lancashire: “I haven’t really thought about it, I know I’m contracted to Southampton so I’m looking forward to going back there and doing pre-season. “I’m looking forward to seeing my family and friends and going on holiday with them, that’s it. It’s a very good question but one I don’t have the answer to right now.” Asked about his time at Burnley, Tella added: “Individually and as a team this season has exceeded everyone’s expectations. “When you get relegated you want to go straight back up into the Premier League. The fact we were able to do that first time and play the way we did has been an amazing feeling. “It’s a bit of a 50/50, I wanted to score goals and I’ve not been prolific growing up. Playing in a team like this they can find me and I can find them so we have scored so many goals this season, I’m happy to score but more importantly, I’ve got the winners medal.”

#PLStories- Southampton’s Nathan Tella reveals Thierry Henry and Walcott inspiration #SAINTSFC

Tella began his career in the Arsenal academy before joining Saints in 2017 where he went on to make his Premier League debut three years later.  But he struggled to nail down a consistent starting role in the two seasons following his breakthrough and was allowed to depart on loan to Burnley last summer. Moving down to the Championship Tella has flourished, scoring 17 league goals and earning a place in the division’s Team of the Year as his side coasted to the title. Of course, at seven years old you can’t really say you play like someone but the stuff he was doing in games I would try to do with my local team.  “Sometimes it worked, sometimes it wouldn’t but just having the confidence to try it, I feel like that’s what made me stand out a bit at an early age. “And then as I was growing up a bit and getting older I started to look at Theo Walcott who moved from Southampton to Arsenal.  🗣️ "Always been an Arsenal fan, Thierry Henry was my biggest inspiration. He was someone I looked at and I wanted to play my game like, especially because I moved to the right wing where he played.” It remains to be seen what the future has in store for Tella who no doubt has admirers at both St Mary’s and Turf Moor.  With Burnley going up to the Premier League and Saints almost certainly headed for the Championship it would be no surprise if Vincent Kompany’s side pursued a permanent move but Sport Republic hold the cards and will be able to demand a major fee for the attacking sensation.
Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl gives his verdict on recalling loaned player Nathan Tella #SAINTSFC

SAINTS manager Ralph Hasenhuttl remained coy on the possibility of recalling in-form Nathan Tella from his loan spell with Championship leaders Burnley. After a frustrating campaign hampered by injuries, Tella left St Mary's for Turf Moor on a season-long loan in the summer. Dropping down a division, Tella has excelled under former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, making 16 appearances and scoring six times. It is believed that Saints have the option to recall the talented forward in January, but speaking on Thursday ahead of this weekend's trip to Crystal Palace, Hasenhuttl refused to say whether that was a possibility the club is pursuing. READ MORE: Analysing impressive Tella loan spell and what it says about Saints future "We will see what we do," the Austrian answered. "We have our eyes open and we will definitely look very detailed into what we will do with him." Despite signing a new long-term contract with Saints last winter, Tella failed to nail down a consistent starting spot in Hasehuttl's side, starting a total of ten games over the course of the 2021/22 season. Three words: Nathan Tella Baby 🎶 pic.twitter.com/cADjmHBvhN — Burnley FC (@BurnleyOfficial) October 11, 2022 With Sekou Mara, Joe Aribo, and Samuel Edozie joining the club's forward ranks this summer, Tella's route to regular minutes was blocked further and as such, the decision was made for the 24-year-old to head out on loan. He has already established himself as a fan-favourite in Lancashire and a crucial element of Burney's promotion aspirations. "I'm very pleased (with his progress)," Hasenhuttl added.  "I know that some people say it's only the Championship that he scores goals but I must say it's still a big achievement. "For me and this is exactly what we wanted to see - that he gets a lot of game time and can show his qualities. I mean he has shown it also in the Premier League so far. For him, it didn't look like he would get enough game time this season. But I think it was the right decision to take (loan him). Burnley currently sit top of the Championship table with Tella second in their goalscoring charts behind only former Saint Jay Rodriguez. #PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl explains why Southampton loaned Nathan Tella to Burnley #SAINTSFC #BurnleyFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl has insisted he was already “fully convinced” by out-on-loan Nathan Tella, even before he began to excel in the Championship. The 23-year-old has become a fan favourite at Burnley after scoring three goals in his first eight matches, and contributing elsewhere too. The former Arsenal academy starlet got fans off their seats with an exceptional first touch and skill to win a penalty in a televised Friday evening clash with West Brom. Tella, who has made 41 appearances for Saints, could likely be contributing in Hasenhuttl’s first-team but at this stage of his injury-hit career, regular minutes were deemed most important. “Exactly, yeah. This is always the balance you have to find, you are fully convinced about this player but cannot give him the chance to develop,” Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo, when asked about Tella. “The most important thing at this age is the guys are playing games every weekend, this is the only chance to make them better and bring them on to the highest level. "This is not always possible – only sessions and training. This is why we decided to let him go. Hopefully we won’t miss him for now. “We have more than only these guys who are willing to learn and willing to do a good job. This should be normally the standard.” The Austrian added: "We get reports after every weekend, which is normal I think. We are also watching them, we have a few players now in the Championship and they are doing quite well. "Nathan is scoring goals, Will Smallbone is always playing. This is exactly what we wanted them to do and we have them on our radar and we’re very happy they get the chance to play.” Tella was forced off the pitch with injury 73 minutes into a clash with Burnley's Lancashire rivals Preston North End, but returned in time for their next match versus Bristol City. Burnley, targeting automatic promotion under Vincent Kompany, currently sit fourth in the Championship table with 17 points from their opening 10 fixtures. Tella himself has spoken openly about enjoying his spell in Lancashire, which could see him play regularly in the Championship for the rest of the season. "When you are playing football you have no reason not to smile," said Tella. "I am really enjoying it and I feel like I am really coming out of my shell and I am playing with confidence and I want to keep that up. "I feel like everyone gets touches of the ball (in the system) we have a lot of possession and opportunities for the boys to show how good they are. I can't really fault it. “Some defences can push up and Jay Rodriguez likes to go in short so it gives me space to run into behind and gives me an opportunity to show my legs." #PLStories- Southampton ace Nathan Tella opens up on injury battle after revealing a week became months of injured status #SAINTSFC

NATHAN Tella admits this season has been one “where I’ve learnt the most about myself”, after missing nearly three months through a 10-day injury that he just could not shake. Playing less than 90 Premier League minutes until the end of November, 22-year-old Tella had then broken into Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side with six starts – interrupted themselves by a COVID absence. However, the sixth – away at Wolves during the 3-1 defeat on January 15 – was still his most recent. The academy graduate revealed how a tear in his hip led to an extended nightmare. “It did take a lot longer. It was meant to be a couple of days, maybe a week,” Tella said. "I had a tear in my hip and for some reason, blood kept getting into the tear and it just wasn't healing. Nathan Tella made a return as a substitute at Leeds United this month (Pic: PA) “I wasn't able to sprint to my full pace, so it was quite painful and a 10-day injury turned into a six-week, seven-week injury, which wasn't ideal. "But I think it was probably better for me to come back when I did rather than rush it and end up out again for even longer. Everything is back to a similar level now and it is just about playing games and trying to get involved in the team." It was a blow at an overwhelmingly positive time for Tella, who had just signed a new three-and-half year contract with the club – to extend his St Mary’s stay until 2025. After making 18 Premier League appearances and scoring his first top-flight goal across 750 minutes last season, Tella’s action has been limited to 11 matches and just under 600 minutes so far this. Nathan Tella's only goal this season came in EFL Cup competition (Pic: PA) He made a return to the side as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road, following the international break. “I’d say it’s been quite frustrating but it’s probably the year where I’ve learnt the most about myself,” he continued. “At the start of the season I wasn’t playing as much as I wanted to, I was only seemingly playing in the cup and that was quite challenging when obviously all I wanted to do was play football. “And then I had the period where I was in the team and I was playing, and even though I didn’t feel like I was playing my best football I was happy I was playing and able to be a part of it. Good point away from home against a tough opposition. Happy to be back out there! pic.twitter.com/0RCdwbQ4hz — tella (@NathanTella_11) April 2, 2022 “Picking up the injuries was another setback in the season which wasn’t ideal, but now I’m back I’m hoping that I can have a better end to the season – it seems to have been up and down, a bit like a rollercoaster. So hopefully I can end on a high. It’s been long.” Asked what he is referring to by learning about himself, Tella elaborated: “I just mean it in a sense that because I wanted to play, but it’s about not beating myself up if I make silly decisions in the training sessions. “If I give the ball away I might have looked at it like, ‘this is why I’m not playing or not getting an opportunity’, but I feel like I just needed to find myself and just relax in those moments, just be confident in the training sessions and then that will relay to the pitch. “I feel like once I found that confidence in training, it started to help in my performances on the pitch.” Saints’ next match after Tella sustained the injury, a 1-1 draw with Manchester City, started a seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions. Saints' impressive run included a 3-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur (Pic: PA) The optimists began to look up the table and into the top-half as the good times rolled, but Saints’ academy graduate could only watch on from the rehabilitation room. “It was quite frustrating because obviously you want to be part of the team when winning and they’re performing well,” Tella admitted. “They had the unbeaten run and played well in so many of those games, but as a teammate I was so happy for the team and as a fan I was so happy for the team. “Personally it was obviously a bit disheartening because I wanted to be involved, I wanted to have the same emotions as the team and as the fans in the stadium, but that’s football – it’s part of the game, you’re going to pick up injuries. “Now I’m back I’m hoping to get into the squad and hopefully get onto the pitch and play some games to end the season.”

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl happy after Nathan Tella renews Saints contract #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl is pleased to tie Nathan Tella down to a fresh contract, admitting: "These are the sort of players we like to develop at Southampton." Academy graduate Tella today extended his contract at Saints, signing a new deal which runs until the summer of 2025. He previously penned a long-term deal in July 2020, which was due to expire at the end of the 2022-23 campaign. But the 22-year-old has now committed for another three-and-a-half years at St Mary's. Boss Hasenhuttl said: “Nathan is a good example of a young player with a lot of potential who is willing to learn and to push himself. "These are the sort of players we like to develop at Southampton. “He has played some excellent games already and made some good improvements in his time working with us. "I think he can develop a lot more here, so it is good that he can focus on improving his qualities with us even more over the coming seasons.” Tella debuted for the first team in June 2020 and has now made 33 senior appearances, scoring twice.

#PLStories- Nathan Tella signs brand-new contract with Southampton #SAINTSFC

NATHAN Tella has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract at Saints that will see him remain with the club until 2025. The former Arsenal academy man has been rewarded by the club that he joined back in 2017 with a brand-new deal. Tella has made eight appearances in the Premier League this season and has had to battle competition for starting places, but it takes his total first-team appearances to 33. Speaking after signing his deal, Tella said: “I'm over the moon. I really like the club, I'm really enjoying my time here. The fact that the club are believing in me is something I'm so thankful for. “The club have been nothing but great to me all season, and last season as well. They believe in me and now I've got to believe in myself. “Moving forward, I want to repay the faith they have in me. I want to play more games, be involved in more goals and help the team progress.” Tella made his first-team debut in the 3-0 win at Norwich in June 2020 and has scored twice in Saints colours, as well as being prolific in Premier League 2 for the B team.

#PLStories- Nathan Tella says Saints’ focus is on games and not league table #SAINTSFC

NATHAN Tella insists Saints are "not looking too much" at their increasingly precarious league position, despite a run of just two points from their past five matches. Ahead of Tuesday night's Premier League fixtures, Ralph Hasenhuttl's men sat 16th in the table, just five points clear of the relegation zone, having played a game more than 18th-placed Burnley. That comes after defeats at Norwich, Liverpool and Arsenal, as well as home draws with Leicester and Brighton. Saints have the chance to get back on track with a trip to Crystal Palace tomorrow (7.30pm), before welcoming Brentford to St Mary's on Saturday. Asked if this has become a massive week for the club, Tella told the Daily Echo: "All weeks are massive. "We don’t want to change our approach for every game. But we know what we’ve got to go out and do and react on Wednesday." Quizzed on if there was a worry about being dragged towards the bottom three, the talented forward added: "We’re not looking too much into that. "Of course we know what happens when we don’t pick up results, but then as a team we’ve got to focus on what we can do and try and change our results." Saints could be without a host of players for tomorrow's trip to the capital. Alex McCarthy, Fraser Forster, Stuart Armstrong and Che Adams are all definitely ruled out, while Adam Armstrong and Armando Broja are doubts after limping off against Arsenal. "We obviously don’t know the extent of the injuries at the moment, but we’ve got enough players in the team that can come in and do a job," insisted Tella. "That’s what the manager wants, to have strength in depth. Now we’ve got enough players, we’ll see that."

#PLStories- Nathan Tella says Saints have to go ‘back to the drawing board’ #SAINTSFC

DETERMINED Nathan Tella admitted Saints had to go “back to the drawing board” following their 3-0 humbling at Arsenal. Despite early chances for the visitors at Emirates Stadium, Saints were left to ponder a fifth game without a win in the Premier League after Mikel Arteta’s Gunners seized control of the contest. Reacting to the game as a whole, Tella told the Daily Echo: “It was a tough day. “The first 20 minutes or so we matched them. They couldn’t really get out and they struggled. They struggled to deal with our pressing. “Once they scored the first goal, that just made it difficult for ourselves to get back into the game. “We obviously created a few chances in the second half, but we’ve just got to put them away or I’ve got to put them away. “We’ve just got to go back to the drawing board, start again and take what we’ve learned. “These games are always fine margins. If we score one of the chances we created, then it’s a different game. “Then the same with them, if they don’t score one of their chances they go in with a different team talk at half-time. “That’s all on us, we’ve got to hold our hands up. We’ve got to show what we’re about and we weren’t able to stamp our authority on the game, which was quite disappointing.” Defeat left Saints 16th in the Premier League table, with just three wins from their opening 16 league contests. “We know they (Arsenal) are a team that have got quality on the ball and they showed that,” said Tella. "Especially that period in the second half where we couldn’t get the ball and we couldn’t get out. “Nothing was going our way in that period. But that’s what happens when you play against quality teams. “They do that. They make us run, they make us work hard and there’s no reason why we can’t do that to teams, we’ve just got to look at that, take that on to the next game.” Saints make the trip to Crystal Palace in the top flight on Wednesday.

#PLStories- Nathan Tella on former Arsenal teammate Emile Smith Rowe #SAINTSFC #ARSENALFC

NATHAN Tella is relishing the possibility of facing former club Arsenal, a side which could include some of his old teammates. The Gunners have one of the youngest squads in the Premier League, with many players having come through the youth ranks. That includes Tella's close friend Eddie Nketiah, as well as the likes of England international duo Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe. Tella himself came through the youth system at Arsenal, before being let go and linking up with Saints in 2017. And he could face his former club for the first time tomorrow, when Saints head to Emirates Stadium in the Premier League (3pm). "I can’t get too caught up in the emotions of playing against Arsenal," Tella told the Daily Echo. "At the end of the day it’s another team who are in the league and another team who are battling to pick up results. So I feel like it should just be a good game." Asked about the possibility of having some Arsenal supporting friends in the crowd on Saturday, Tella added: "It will be nice to obviously see them, but I want to see them after we’ve won so I can sort of rub it in their faces a bit! "But it will be nice to see some old faces and people who I’ve known and seen me grow up as well, so it will be good." Discussing Arsenal's young stars, Tella added: "Saka was a little bit younger than me, but Emile Smith Rowe was another one who I played with. "He was playing up quite a bit, because he’s a year younger than me. "He’s always been a very good player, now the fact he’s able to do it at Arsenal just shows what everyone would know, he’s a very good player." After a spell out the side, Tella has started the past two league games for Saints. And he is determined not to let the occasion of facing Arsenal derail his comeback into the team. "From speaking to my dad about it, we were just laughing at the possibility of the first time I'm playing at the Emirates could be for Southampton," said Tella. "It would mean a lot. "But it doesn't matter, because I can't be too focused on the event, I have to focus on the performance and what the team needs to do to get the result. "I can't get too caught up with my own emotions and my own feelings towards the game, because that will distract me. "Especially now that I have come back into the team, I don't want to do anything that would jeopardise my spot here."

#PLStories- Nathan Tella gives insight to getting back from injury with right fitness #SAINTSFC

NATHAN Tella revealed an improved diet and keeping match sharp by playing for the B team were key to him battling his way back into Saints' starting line-up. The talented 22-year-old was one of Saints' shining lights during the closing weeks of the 2020-21 campaign, netting his first goal for the club in a Premier League victory over Fulham at St Mary's in May. However, despite looking lively during pre-season, including scoring in a win at Swansea, Tella's minutes at the start of this season were limited. He featured for just 10 minutes of the club's first six Premier League matches, although did get a chance and scored in the 8-0 Carabao Cup thumping of Newport County. After starting against Chelsea in the league, another spell out the side followed. But in the past three fixtures, Tella has been granted more opportunities in the side. The attacker came off the bench at half-time against Liverpool, before starting against Leicester City four days later. Tella then kept his spot for Saturday's draw against Brighton, meaning the Stevenage-born ace played more minutes across eight days than in the previous two months. "It’s nice," said Tella in an interview with the Daily Echo. "I was quite frustrated at myself that I hadn’t played as much football as I would’ve liked. The fact that now the manager has picked me to play the last two games and I’ve been involved from the start is something which I’m thankful to him for. "And I hope that there’s many more opportunities if I just continue to do the right thing." Asked how tough it was to stay patient having ended last season so strongly, Tella added: "That’s football. Football is not always just going to be plain sailing. "You’re going to have ups, you’re going to have downs. I have to be honest, this was a down for me. "But at the same time I used it as a learning point, to learn what I need to do to get back into the team, what I need to do to start or what I need to do to come on. "The team have helped me, the coaching staff have helped me, just kept being positive to me and helping me when I was struggling. "But I’m thankful and now I’m back in the team, I just want to hopefully stay there for as long as I possibly can." Discussing his relationship with boss Ralph Hasenhuttl during his spell out of the side, Tella said: "I felt like the main thing for me was I just wanted to play football. I felt like I just needed to be fit, because if I was to get the opportunity, I wanted to be able to play as long as I can and not feel like I’m tired and just focus on my football instead of my fitness. "But of course he’s helped me, told me what I needed to do to get back into the team. I was able to go and play with the B team to go and get minutes and get confidence and he came and watched and told me he was impressed with how I did. "Now I’ve played the last two games, so I feel like it’s worked." Hasenhuttl has previously praised Tella's attitude for asking to go and play for the B team. Despite having been named on the bench at Watford in the Premier League the day before, Tella played for Dave Horseman's side in a Premier League 2 clash against Aston Villa at Staplewood, scoring in the 4-0 victory. "It was just more for minutes to be honest," said Tella when asked why he wanted to play for the B team back in October. "I hadn’t played as much football as I perhaps would’ve liked to or perhaps would’ve hoped to by that point in the season. "Obviously the B team are still a very good team so it was quite challenging and a competitive game. "So the fact I was able to play in that game, I felt like I was able to do well. "It was obviously good for the B team to pick up points, but then also good for myself. So that when I’ve got the opportunity to play, I’ve been able to feel fitter than perhaps I would’ve been if I hadn’t played in those games." As referenced on a couple of occasions by Tella, working hard to keep himself fit has been a key factor in his return to the first team line-up. And he explained how activities away from the training ground have also played a role, notably his new hobby of cooking. Asked how he was getting on in the kitchen, Tella said: "It’s going all right! I can’t lie, I’ve experimented with a few dishes and they’ve gone better than I’ve expected. "But I’ve only had to throw out one meal I’ve made! "But no, it’s all been good and it’s helping me. I feel like my diet has improved as well, which is helping me. "I live by myself. I used to live with Dan N’Lundulu, but obviously now he’s gone on loan I’ve been here by myself for the season." But teammate N'Lundulu should not be expecting any of Tella's speciality dishes when he returns from his spell at Lincoln. Tella said: "No, I’ll be quite selfish with my meals to be honest! "I like my own cooking, I don’t know if he will. I’ll just keep it to myself."

#PLStories- Nathan Tella reveals Willy Caballero has looked good in training with Southampton squad #SAINTSFC

NATHAN Tella is excited to see new signing Willy Caballero in action, with the goalkeeper having made a good early impression at Saints. Caballero, 40, arrived at the club this week on a one-month deal, following injuries to the club's two most senior goalkeepers in Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy. That left Harry Lewis as the only other first-team keeper on the books, the 23-year-old having not yet made his Premier League debut. Caballero was a free agent, having left Chelsea over the summer. The Argentina international's glittering CV includes a long career in Spain, before spending three years at Manchester City and four with Chelsea. He was the penalty shoot-out hero in winning the League Cup with City, before claiming FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League glory during his time at Stamford Bridge, albeit as an unused substitute in those finals. Asked how Caballero had settled in at Saints, his new teammate Tella told the Daily Echo: "He’s trained with us the past two days. He’s looked very good. "It’s nice to have someone there as well with a lot of experience. "He’s here to help us pick up points and get back further up the table, where we feel like we deserve to be. "It’s just nice to have him because we’ve got quite a young team, quite a young defence and it will be nice for him to just pass that experience. "He communicates a lot to the back four, which is good. That is something we need. "I’m looking forward to seeing him play at the weekend, if he plays." Caballero could debut for Saints away at Arsenal on Saturday (3pm).

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl responds to Nathan Tella game time questions #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl insists he has “a good relationship” with Nathan Tella and offers the assurance that: “We will have games where he is my number one option.” Supporters were left disappointed after Tella was an unused substitute during the 2-1 defeat at Norwich, despite Theo Walcott coming on and Ibrahima Diallo being used in the 10 from the off. It was seen by some as a slight to Tella, who has only made one Premier League start this campaign. It is known that Hasenhuttl sees the 22-year-old’s best position as a forward, with Adam Armstrong, Armando Broja and Che Adams all likely ahead of him in that pecking order. But speaking ahead of the visit to Liverpool, Hasenhuttl responded to a question on the youngster’s development. He said: "He will get time. I think it is a special situation with him. He is very similar to Adam Armstrong and this is his problem. "There will be games where we need his qualities and he has them. These games will come, for sure, he is still so young and he is willing to learn. "There are still times when he is a little sloppy in his technique but this is getting better and that's normal. "I have a good relationship with this guy and all the young lads. They are pushing themselves and they all want to play." He added: "Tella played a fantastic game against Chelsea, for example, and we will have games where he is my number one option."

#PLStories- Southampton’s Nathan Tella credits family and friends for his career #SAINTSFC

LIKEABLE Saints youngster Nathan Tella has credited his family and friends for helping him make a career in football, adding that they: “Motivated me to live my dream.” The 22-year-old forward has struggled for gametime so far during the 2021-22 season but has already made himself a stalwart in Saints’ matchday squads. He scored his first Premier League goal against Fulham last year, and added his first notch of this campaign in the EFL Cup tie vs Newport County. And now the smiley former Arsenal academy man has revealed how his family were major motivators, in an interview with club media. #PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl reveals Nathan Tella will play for Southampton #SAINTSFC

SAINTS manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has reassured supporters and Nathan Tella himself that “in the next two weeks he will get a lot of chances to play.” The 22-year-old attacker made his first start of the Premier League season at Stamford Bridge before the international break, and his pace and enthusiasm did cause the Blues some problems. Although they ran out eventual 3-1 winners following James Ward-Prowse’s red card, Saints’ ‘starboy’ will have done his reputation in the eyes of the Austrian boss no harm. He was thrust into the starting fold having not played a minute of Premier League action since the opening day, where he was substituted on for the final ten of the disaster at Everton’s Goodison Park. Nathan Tella is a popular member of the Saints squad internally and externally (Pic: PA) In that time, Tella has watched on as the likes of Shane Long were called upon to impact the game from a losing position before his services were requested by Hasenhuttl, despite the boss saying “his development is good.” 👉🏾😃👈🏾 pic.twitter.com/NMEzDwgeGd — tella (@NathanTella_11) August 25, 2021 But with pace and a willing to be direct, it sounds as though the manager is now going to call on him regularly to help get his side out of a winless slump throughout the next five crucial fixtures. Asked how he judged Tella’s performance against Chelsea and whether the starting chance has buoyed the youngster, Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo: “Absolutely, he is a young lad who, especially with his speed and with his effort, he’s always a threat for the opponent. Nathan Tella has played in both EFL Cup matches as Saints have reached the last 16 (Pic: PA) “Still needs to be more precise in his actions. I think to be honest his development is good, he is still a very young lad and we have to be patient with his development and giving him chances in the right moments in games. “I think Chelsea was a good opportunity for him and he did not do a bad job.” He continued: “But the Premier League is quite tough for a young lad and I think he will take the opportunities he gets, I’m sure in the next weeks he will get a lot of chances to play.” Tella notched his first Premier League goal in a 3-1 win against Fulham in May this year, and will be keen to add to his tally. Nathan Tella celebrates a maiden Premier League goal against Fulham (Pic: PA) Saints take on Leeds United, Watford, Burnley, Aston Villa and Norwich in the next five – a block of games that will be crucial to the direction of the campaign. Stuart Armstrong has made a return from injury that adds to the competition in Hasenhuttl’s wide ten roles, but Che Adams has a muscle injury that could open the door for players like Tella to operate in a striking capacity.

THE answer to Nathan Tella’s lack of gametime may lie in how Ralph Hasenhuttl views his best position, although the boss assures: “He will get his chance, even in the Premier League.” The former Arsenal academy man looked like he’d made his name in Saints’ first team squad a brief prolific spell in the B team, going on to feature 18 times in the Premier League. Speaking in an earlier press conference, the Austrian said: “I must say that, in the ten positions, he has a lot of good qualities to play there. “He is very energetic and he has a really good ability against the ball, running back and sprinting back. Nathan Tella's only appearances since the opening day of the campaign have been in the EFL Cup (Pic: PA) “In this position though, you need to keep the ball a little bit more and to be a little bit cooler. He is like a young horse who wants to run, he wants to run at defenders and he wants to get behind the last line. “It will help him if he can get a little closer to the goal,” before adding crucially: “I see him as a striker. “But he can play as a ten, yes. “We have a lot of alternatives up front, so it will not be easy but he is still on my list. He is an alternative for Adam Armstrong, who does a very good job up front. He will get his chances to play.” 👉🏾😃👈🏾 pic.twitter.com/NMEzDwgeGd — tella (@NathanTella_11) August 25, 2021 Stevenage-born Tella is highly thought of both internally and externally at Saints, touted as the best academy product they’ve produced in the last few years. But with the preferred options of Adam Armstrong, Che Adams and even loanee Armando Broja – is that why he has seen so little action? Hasenhuttl added: “We saw last season that Nathan was a young player who was by far the most developed of the younger group and he had a really good pre-season, also. This despite the youngster having an impressive pre-season (Pic: Stuart Martin) “I am actually a little bit disappointed at the moment that I cannot give him more chances to play. The games that we are playing at the moment are not perfect for him, I think. “As always with young players, he must consistently work hard and show up to get those chances to play. “He will get his chances to play, even in the Premier League.” Up until April 2017, Tella was playing for Arsenal in the Under-18 Premier League, before he was told that he wouldn’t receive a professional deal at the end of his scholarship and he signed for Saints.

#PLStories- Southampton defender #JackStephens discusses #NathanTella and Southampton FC squad #SAINTSFC

SAINTS defender Jack Stephens has opened up on his unlikely bromance with teammate Nathan Tella admitting: “I just want to look out for him, he makes me laugh and we’re just so different.” Centre-back Stephens, 27, has become great friends with 22-year-old academy graduate and exciting forward Tella, prompting the club website to ask about their friendship. Stephens joined Saints from Plymouth Argyle back in 2011, while Tella arrived in the academy from Arsenal in 2017, making his first-team debut in June 2020. Since then, Tella has gone on to play 20 Premier League games for the club, scoring once, but his infectious attitude and wide, cheeky smile has helped cut him a popular figure both internally and externally at the club. I just want him to do really well and get right to the very top, which he can do. “He’s just very interesting, he just makes me laugh. And we’re so different, I think that’s what intrigues me. We’re so different as individuals.” Nathan Tella has only made one Premier League appearance so far this season (Picture: PA) The club asked Stephens a series of questions about the squad and asking the defender to elaborate on the answer. Asked who the most annoying teammate is, Stephens joked: “Sharing a dressing room with Moussa, there’s never a dull moment with Moussa. “When he’s happy, he’s very happy. Plenty of singing, plenty of dancing, plenty of music playing. He doesn’t annoy me but he’s definitely the extravagant teammate.” On who he shouts at the most in-game, he added: “I give Che (Adams) a bit of stick, but he’s a good mate of mine so it’s nothing personal. But I’m probably a bit harsh on Che.” After making his Premier League debut during the 2016-17 season and going on to have made well over 100 first team appearances, Stephens has played with a number of past and present Saints defenders. That includes Champions League and Premier League winner Virgil van Dijk, who played alongside Stephens against Leicester in January 2017. But when asked who would be the defender he would like to return to the club and in their prime, to play alongside him now, Stephens answered: “I’d go with Maya (Yoshida). Jack Stephens names Maya Yoshida as among his favourite defensive partners (Picture: PA) “I think you have to look at it from a partnership point of view. The spell I had with Maya when I first got into the team, it just felt easy, we never had to talk about the game or where we going to be it was just so natural. “He was great for me off the pitch, a fantastic person, fantastic role model, an all-round brilliant guy.”
Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- #RalphHasenhuttl says Saints ‘can count on’ #MohamedElyounoussi #SAINTSFC

MANAGER Ralph Hasenhuttl insisted Saints could “count on” returning Mohamed Elyounoussi and added: “I’m sure that this season he will make a lot of games.” The Norway international has spent the past two campaigns away from Saints on loan at Scottish giants Celtic, where he chalked up 67 appearances in all competitions, as well as 24 goals. The winger also claimed a Scottish Premiership title and League Cup trophy during his first year north of the border, before returning to Saints this pre-season. Elyounoussi featured in games against the likes of Swansea and Levante during the St Mary’s side’s warm-up fixtures. He was also named among the substitutes for the club’s Premier League opener at Everton on Saturday. Elyounoussi signed for Saints from Swiss outfit Basel under Mark Hughes in June 2018. He has played eight times for the south coast side under current boss Hasenhuttl. Asked by the Daily Echo what it was like to work with the 27-year-old once again, Hasenhuttl replied: “He’s a very good player with some important skills for our game. “Strong in the red zone, in the pockets, good solutions there. “He showed in the pre-season that we can count on him and I’m sure that this season he will make a lot of games.” Elyounoussi also played under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during his time at Molde – and could come up against him on Sunday when Saints host Manchester United in the top flight. And fellow forward Nathan Tella insisted it was a “bonus” to have the former Basel man back among the ranks. “I’ve been really impressed with him actually,” said Tella, when asked about Elyounoussi’s return. “He works really hard for the team, is very good on the ball and is just a nice guy to have around the training ground. “He’s someone who, when he first came to the club, I was still in the under-23s so I didn’t really see much of him. “But obviously now I’m with the first team, just speaking to him about how he found Celtic and how he enjoyed it there and how he’s looking to work hard to get into the team here. “He’s doing all the right things. He’s trained really well, full of confidence and ability. It’s going to be a bonus to have him in the team.”

#PLStories- #NathanTella reveals all on Southampton FC’s new signings #SAINTSFC

NATHAN Tella insists Saints’ new signings have already settled in well and put it down to the squad, revealing: “I feel like in some teams maybe the boys aren’t as welcoming, but here they are.” Ralph Hasenhuttl has welcomed six summer additions, but with loanee Theo Walcott returning and Dynel Simeu entering the B team it’s four brand new first-teamers. Tella, 22, has made 19 Premier League appearances before appearing off the bench in Saints’ 2021-22 opening day defeat at Everton’s Goodison Park, where debutant Adam Armstrong scored but the team were powerless to resist a second-half salvo. Three of the four signings featured and all were in from the start, with Romain Perraud occupying left-back and the selection of Tino Livramento over stalwart Kyle Walker-Peters raising some eyebrows. All three did quite well, with the aforementioned Armstrong and Livramento particularly standing out in view of some supporters – on-loan Chelsea striker Armando Broja didn’t make the squad. Speaking to the Daily Echo, Tella revealed: “Armando and Adam are both really good lads, I’m looking forward to playing with them and seeing what they’re capable of, helping the team progress. “I feel like in some teams, maybe the boys aren’t as welcoming but here the boys are welcoming them really well, it’s like they’ve been here for a long time, joining in with the banter and communicating. “It’s all good, they understand the team and what they’re here to do, they’re here to help the team. “And also understanding them on a human level as well, getting along well, so I’m looking forward to playing with them.” On whether a transfer is as exciting for a player as it is for fans, he added: “Yeah it always excites me, I’m still a fan myself. “I like transfers, I like seeing new people come to the club. Now that I’m in the first team environment, I just think it’s going to help the team really well so it’s a positive.” For Tella, the two additions of strikers Armstrong and Broja could be seen as direct competition, with the young forward advancing further up the pitch as he gets more and more gametime. Both are out-and-out strikers, while Tella is a bit more versatile in operating anywhere across the front four. Against Everton, the former Arsenal academy man was introduced in one of the winger roles, but admits he relishes in the challenge of battling for minutes: “That’s what I want, I like competition. “I think it will bring the best out of me, make me want to do more, work harder and show that I can do more. “As well as myself, it will be good for the defenders as if the attackers are training well every day they will have to train even better to stop us from scoring. “That will be good for the team because when it comes to the game they will have had that confidence that they can stop us training well or creating chances, so they can do that against opposition in the Premier League. “I think it will benefit the team. It’s looking good, yeah.”

#PLStories- #NathanTella reveals help provided by #TheoWalcott at Southampton #SaintsFC

The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season at Saints, featuring 22 times for the first team in all competitions. Former Arsenal youngster Tella made his senior Saints debut almost one year ago, coming off the bench in a 3-0 win at Norwich City during Project Restart at the end of the 2019-20 campaign. He kicked on during 2020-21, making eight starts, including seven in the Premier League. But it was an impact appearance off the bench which yielded his first goal, netting just two minutes after coming on last month to help Saints to a 3-1 win over Fulham at St Mary's. "It’s something I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid," Tella told the Daily Echo. "I’ve seen players scoring in the Premier League and I’m thinking 'why can’t I be one of those?'. "Now that I’ve been able to put the ball in the back of the net and get off the mark, I hope that this is just the start of a goalscoring run in my career." After finding the net, Tella turned provider, teeing up another academy graduate in Theo Walcott, a player 11 years his senior. "As a player and a forward, the goal is not only just to score goals, but it’s to get assists," said Tella. "I’m so happy I was able to get an assist for Theo. "He’s helped me so much this season and I’m just delighted." Walcott spent last season on loan at Saints and has since signed a two-year contract to join the club as a free agent when his deal at Everton expires this month.
Fraser Forster

#PLStories- #FraserFoster and other Saints players excited to see fans return to St Mary’s #SAINTSFC

SAINTS players are excited to see supporters finally return to St Mary's tomorrow evening after five long months away. A limited number of fans were permitted for two home matches in December, when Saints beat Sheffield United before losing to Manchester City. But after tighter coronavirus restrictions were subsequently introduced, no supporters have been allowed in to St Mary's since. That will all change tomorrow night, with 8,000 permitted for the visit of Leeds United, Saints' final home game of the season. "Obviously it will be huge to have the fans back in," goalkeeper Fraser Forster told the Daily Echo. "It will be fantastic. It’s been a long season so having the fans back will be great and hopefully we can put in a good performance for them in that game." Nathan Tella notched his first senior Saints goal in front of the empty St Mary's stands on Saturday, in a 3-1 win over Fulham. Looking ahead to the prospect of adding to his tally with supporters in attendance on Tuesday night, Tella said: "If I can get another goal it would be a great feeling. "I’m just happy that the fans are going to be back, because they're massive. Bring on Tuesday!"

#PLStories- #NathanTella dedicates first Premier League strike to his late grandfather #SaintsFC

GOALSCORER Nathan Tella dedicated his first Premier League strike to his late grandfather, adding: “That was my first thought once the ball hit the back of the net.” Tella was the star of the show as Saints beat Fulham 3-1 at St Mary’s on Saturday. The 21-year-old came off the bench and just two minutes later slotted home his first Saints goal, on his 21st appearance for the club’s senior side. Asked if there was anybody in particular he would dedicate such a special moment in his career to, Tella told the Daily Echo: “My grandad. He passed away a couple of weeks ago, but him really. “That was my first thought once the ball hit the back of the net. I thought of my family, I thought of him and I know he’s just proud of me and I am dedicating that goal to him.” Tella’s strike came in Saints’ final behind-closed-doors game of the season, with supporters set to return on Tuesday, when Leeds United visit St Mary’s. “Of course I wanted my family here,” said the Stevenage-born ace. “But knowing my mum, she would’ve screamed so loud the whole stadium would’ve known that it was her son that had scored! “Perhaps she did it at home. It’s a great feeling.” Speaking last month, Tella said he had been getting advice off his team-mates, telling him not to worry about the wait for his first Saints goal. But he admits he was relieved to finally break the duck. He said: “Yeah, it’s been a long time! I’ve had chances this season but I’ve known even myself I’ve got to be so much better than that. “But (on Saturday) I’m just thankful that it was able to go in the back of the net, I’m just delighted. It’s just an amazing and unforgettable experience. I’m so happy.” Asked what was going through his mind when the ball came across from Kyle Walker-Peters for him to tap home, Tella added: “Just get the right contact. Che (Adams) put one into me against Leicester and I just completely fluffed my lines when I was thinking too much about the goal and not the contact. “But (on Saturday) as it came in, my first thought was contact and try and get it into the goal. “I just feel happy that I was able put it in the back of the net and just thankful for Kyle for getting the ball into that area.”

#PLStories- #RalphHasenhuttl says #NathanTella first Saints goal was a ‘special moment’ #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl expressed his delight at Nathan Tella breaking his Saints duck, describing his first Premier League goal as a "special moment". The joy was clear to see for the 21-year-old, when he swept home a Kyle Walker-Peters cross against Fulham at St Mary's, just two minutes after coming off the bench as a substitute. Tella went on to provide an assist for Theo Walcott, who added to Che Adams's early goal to secure a 3-1 victory for Saints. Reflecting on former Arsenal youngster Tella's strike, Hasenhuttl said: "It is time that he scores his first goal. I think he had a few good opportunities so far, but the way he was working for the team today, he deserves a goal. "I am very happy for him and for his assist for Theo." He added: "I had never the feeling that he was under pressure because he had not scored a goal. I think when you see him working for the team, this is normal that he sometimes comes in this situation. "I must say that how we created this goal was something we were working on all the time and the ball behind the last line, Stuey (Armstrong)'s ball to Kyle and then Kyle in behind the last line was what we were talking about. It was exactly the game plan we had and I am very happy that Nathan scored the goal." Asked if this will be a moment Tella will never forget, having battled back from a serious knee injury during his time in Saints' academy, Hasenhuttl added: "Definitely not. I think he’s now on the scorers list in the Premier League, it’s a special moment for him as a striker. "The smile on his face is always there. This is what I really like from him because he enjoys working for the team, he enjoys training with us and he enjoys every day when he is allowed to play football. "Maybe this ACL injury can link to understand how special it is to be part of a Premier League team. "He is a very big talent from our academy and a signal for all the other players that are coming up that there is always a chance."
