Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard explained how the “brilliant” Ashley Young had earned his placed in the side that beat Crystal Palace. Young played from the start as Villa ran out 2-1 victors at Selhurst Park on Saturday. It was a well deserved start, according to Gerrard, who knows what Young can offer having played with him for England. Speaking after the game, the head coach was full of praise for the 36-year-old.
Steven Gerrard said: “He’s been brilliant since I’ve walked in the door, but I expected nothing else. I’ve play with Ash, I know what his standards and his levels are like. He’s earned that start. I thought he came on last week and did really well. He trained well, he backed that up. He deserved his start today. Everything we’ve asked for, to the letter, he’s done.”
