Eddie Howe’s plan for Newcastle United is already mapped out – but he has called for his new squad’s “application” to stay “consistent” if the ultimate goal of Premier League survival is to be achieved.

Eddie Howe said: “I think the international break came at a good time for us. As I say the work we do between now and then (Brentford) is going to be hugely important. It’s a shame it’s not the whole squad because certain players are going to miss out on key work, but it is what it is. We will benefit from this very short window to get ready for the next game.”

United face the Bees on Tyneside looking for their first win six months in the Premier League before a tougher trip to Arsenal the week after.

Eddie Howe said: “The task ahead is huge. It’s a very difficult challenge. I under no illusions and I am not saying it is going to be easy. We have a very difficult fixture list ahead and in December. All we can do, and I know it is a cliche, is to look on the horizon and to the next game. Try to win that and then try to prepare better for the next game after that. There’s no magic wand. It is going to take a lot of hard work instilling what we want in the players. Their application so far has been hugely impressive but we are going to need that to be consistent for us to get there.”
