Thomas Tuchel spoke about Romelu Lukaku’s fitness levels prior to Chelsea’s win over Malmo and the German has now been proven right. The Belgium international hobbled off the pitch and straight down the tunnel in the Blues’ comfortable Champions League victory against the Swedish side on Wednesday evening. His form for Chelsea, though, has been somewhat of a concern for the club’s supporters and Tuchel himself, who blamed the amount of football he has played recently for his goal drought.
Thomas Tuchel said: “We expect goals, he expects goals and we want to bring him into the positions but at the same time but my feeling is with him that he played in too many competitions. He is such a competitor, he will always give 100% when he plays for his country, he’s proud, he’s ambitious. He is not happy they don’t win the EUROS. I have no doubt in his quality. I have no doubt in his personality but things are not so easy for him right now because I think he played too much.”
With Tuchel speaking about the amount of football Lukaku has played of late, it was surprising to many that he elected with him from the start against Malmo.
