Che Adams has poked fun at Manchester United’s Fred after his own goal against Southampton. After getting off to such a great start last week by hammering Leeds United 5-1, United lacked the same attacking verve and penetration on Sunday as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw on the South coast.
Che Adams said: “I think they gave him [Fred] the goal because he doesn’t score many. I’ll take it [deflection] as an assist.”
The irony, of course, is that Fred did actually find the back of the net in last week’s victory over Leeds and currently has more goals to his name this season than Adams. United were able to bring themselves level in the second-half after Mason Greenwood squeezed a shot beneath the goalkeeper following great work from Fernandes and Paul Pogba. But a winner was not forthcoming as United lacked impetus in the attacking third, instead, it was the Saints who went closest to winning the game after Adam Armstrong went through on goal but De Gea did well to deny him. Adams was pleased with the result and the way his side battled for a point.
Che Adams said: “We dug in well and got the point. They are a top, top team but we battled well and got a deserved point. We had chances at the end to nick it ourselves but have to take the positives today and move on to next week. Adam Armstrong is hard to defend and I like playing with him.”
