Stuart McCall is back in football. The 57-year-old has landed a role at Championship side Blackpool. He had been without a job since leaving Bradford City last year. McCall was a hugely popular player at Sheffield United. Signed in 2002, he made 71 league appearances and played a key part in their rise to the Premier League. After retiring from playing, he took on a coaching role as assistant manager to Neil Warnock and also led the reserves to the league title. Having been such an integral part of the first team, he was famously left out of the play-off final starting XI that lost 3-0 to Wolves at the Millennium Stadium. He is now working alongside Blackpool manager Neil Critchley as assistant head coach.
Neil Critchley said: “When I spoke to different people, so many people spoke well of him as a person. It’s important we bring the right characters to the club, both with the playing staff and the backroom staff. Having met Stuart and spoken to him, it was quite clear he would be a great fit for us. He will complement the staff we already have here. His playing career, he played over 700 games, he played at international level too and his coaching career speaks for itself. He’s been assistant to Gordan Strachan as well. He will be invaluable for me with his experience but also for the players, so that’s a great signing for us as well. I’m delighted he’s decided to join us.”
McCall will return to Bramall Lane at the end of October when Blackpool are the visitors.
