Aaron Ramsdale has been tipped to become “one of the best” goalkeepers in England by his former Bournemouth team-mate Asmir Begovic Ramsdale, voted Sheffield United’s player of the year last season despite relegation from the Premier League, is attracting the interest of Arsenal. The Premier League side have reportedly had two bids turned down for the 23-year-old this summer, with Gunners boss Mikel Arteta keen to bring Ramsdale to the Emirates to provide cover and competition for Bernd Leno. But Arsenal have so far yet to meet United’s £40m valuation of Ramsdale, who has three years left on his United contract. Ramsdale, a member of the England squad that reached the final of the European Championships this month, could make his first appearance of pre-season at Doncaster Rovers on Wednesday evening. Ex-Chelsea shot-stopper Begovic, who recently joined Everton,
Asmir Begovic said: “He [Ramsdale] can become one of the best, especially in the country. He’s already proved that he can play at the highest level. He’s got a lot of potential still to fulfil. The more he plays, the more he’s going to progress. So I’m not surprised to see him linked with some of the top clubs. What he’s done over the last couple of years shows everyone the quality he has. With his age, where he’s at, the potential is there to become an even better goalkeeper.”
After three years on the south coast, Ramsdale returned to Bramall Lane last August. The 23-year-old racked up 42 appearances as United failed to avoid the drop. Slavisa Jokanovic, preparing to embark on his first season in charge of United, would like to retain Ramsdale’s services heading into the 2021/22 season. The Blades will return to competitive action on August 7 when they host Birmingham City.
