John Lundstram has admitted the lure of Champions League football was crucial to his decision to leave Sheffield United and join Rangers. The midfielder left Bramall Lane on a free transfer after running down his contract. He subsequently moved north of the border to join Steven Gerrard’s side, offering him a first taste of Scottish football. The attraction of competing in Europe after two seasons in the Premier League was huge for Lundstram, who believes Rangers are geared to challenge in the latter stages of the tournament.

John Lundstram said: “It’s massive, it was a big reason why I’ve come into such a historic club. The facilities, the surroundings, everything here is built to win. Definitely. We have the squad to do it (compete in the Champions League). We showed last year we have the squad to do it, to compete at that level in the late stages of Europe. Scottish football will be a different challenge. We will have a lot of the ball, it’s about breaking teams down and trying to find that opening. It’s a different challenge to what I was used to last season but it’s one I can’t wait for. It’s completely different from where I’ve come from. At times, we didn’t have much of the ball last year so hopefully I can show what I can do with possession of it this year. I’ve always had that mindset, that winning mentality. Obviously, last year wasn’t to be, we all know how difficult a league the Premier League is. It’s not easy to win games in that league. I’ve definitely got that winning mentality, in training, I sulk in my room when I lose at 5-a-side so I definitely have in me.”
