Leeds United will play in front of their biggest crowd for more than 500 days when they visit Amsterdam to play Ajax in a pre-season friendly next month. A clash between Leeds and the four-time European champions has been confirmed for Wednesday, August 4 and although Covid-19 regulations mean that no away fans are permitted to attend, Ajax have confirmed a sizable home crowd will be present. A total 25,000 tickets will be on sale to Ajax fans for the Johan Cruyff Arena match, provided they either have evidence of being vaccinated or return a negative Covid test.
The statement on clubs website read: “To visit this competition we follow the measures from the central government and that is why you need a negative test result or vaccination certificate in addition to a competition card. For a negative test result, you can take a one-time quick test on Tuesday 3 or Wednesday 4 August.”
While Leeds were able to play their final two matches of the Premier League season with a limited number of fans at Southampton’s St Mary’s and then Elland Road, capacity was restricted to around 8,000 on each occasion. The 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town on March 7, 2020, remains the last time Leeds were able to play in front of a capacity crowd. Tyler Roberts turned out at the Johan Cruyff Arena during Euro 2020, when the stadium hosted Wales’ 4-0 last-16 defeat to Denmark.
