Olivier Giroud has bid farewell to Chelsea with his move to AC Milan all but confirmed. A January 2018 signing from London rivals Arsenal, after over 100 appearances across all competitions for the Blues, the Frenchman’s time at Stamford Bridge is officially coming to an end. This is despite Giroud’s contract at Stamford Bridge being extended by a further 12 months, a decision that was made by the club back in April as revealed by director Marina Granovskaia.
Marina Granovskia said: “Olivier has been such a crucial part of so many big moments for this club, from his contribution to our FA Cup victory in 2018 to scoring 11 goals on the way to winning the Europa League in 2019. He has continued to score significant goals, and we will never forget his effort against Atletico Madrid on the way to winning the Champions League this season. With so much to still to play for, there was only one decision we could make when we exercised the option to extend his contract back in April.”
However, fast forward a few weeks and Giroud has swapped west London for Milan after Chelsea accepted an offer of £2million plus significant add-ons. That cash injection could help the Blues towards funding a move for the striker’s replacement amid links to Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Erling Haaland. But for now, it’s all about Giroud and his departure.Taking to social media, the France international penned an emotional farewell post as he revealed that winning three trophies – including the Champions League – was the highlight of his time with the club.
Oliver Giroud said: “To all the Blues, to my teammates, to all my coaches, to the whole club, a huge thank you for these special moments. I’m starting a new journey with a light and happy heart. Our victories in Fa Cup, Europa League and Champions League have been magnificent. Love Oli G.”
