Crystal Palace 1 Chelsea 1

Chris Armstrong threw Crystal Palace a premier league lifeline with his 12th goal of the season at Selhurst Park. The £2 million rated former Millwall striker flung himself forward to head in Gareth Southgate’s 42nd-minute cross and earn Palace a precious survival point.

Steve Coppell’s men showed tremendous spirit to fight back after going behind to a fourth-minute Graham Stuart goal and then having defender John Humphrey taken to hospital with a knee injury after 34 minutes. Chelsea should have rewarded new boss David Webb with a third win in four games but wasted much of their clever approach work with the wayward shooting.

Palace remained in 18th position, six behind Everton but was two points clear of their next opponents Sheffield United. Most importantly they had stretched the lead to third from bottom Middlesborough to 3 points with a game in hand.
