Fifty-five years later, England have finally beaten Germany once again in a knockout game at a major tournament. Kalvin Phillips celebrated gleefully with his England teammates after yet another industrious display, battling well in the middle against Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos and Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka. He held his position well, combined with Declan Rice, offered an advanced passing option for England’s centre-halves and made ambitious passes throughout the 90 minutes. Speaking after the game, England match-winner Raheem Sterling hailed the Leeds man, describing him in glowing terms.
Raheem Sterling said: “We knew the intensity we could play at and we know teams can’t play up to it but we kept going. The two boys in midfield Declan Rice and Phillips were class, they were animals in there and it was a great team performance.”
