Danny Ward’s Euro 2020 campaign is now over after Wales were knocked out of the tournament at the last 16 stage. His clubmate Kasper Schmeichel emerged victorious in the battle of the Leicester City goalkeepers as Denmark beat the Welsh 4-0 in Amsterdam on Saturday. Speaking ahead of the Denmark game,

Danny Ward said: “I have always seen myself as a number one but it’s just been unfortunate, and mentally it has been tough to keep going every day. But at the same time I can’t have any complaints because Kasper has been the number one and an unbelievable servant to Leicester. And his form since I arrived at the club three years ago has maybe been kind of testament to how much I have pushed him. I’m not the manager (Brendan Rodgers), I don’t pick the team but hopefully I will give him a little bit more to think about after this last month or so.”

The 28-year-old Danny Ward has not played a single Premier League game in that time – but found himself first choice keeper for Wales at the Euros, impressing against Switzerland, Turkey and Italy in the group stage, while there was little he could have done about any of the goals he conceded in the Denmark match. Ward’s exploits have raised questions over his Leicester future, and he has been linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
