Sheffield United hit Tottenham for six goals at Bramall lane to surge out of the bottom three and end the Londoners’ six-match winning run. Ian Bryson grabbed two, Brian Deane, Franz Carr and substitute Paul Rogers one apiece while Tottenham midfielder Andy Gray scored a remarkable own goal as Terry Venables’s side turned on a dismal display.

The match was already over at half time when Spurs were down by four goals. The victory boosted United in their relegation battle and for their FA cup sixth round trip to Blackburn Rovers a few days later.
