England boss Gareth Southgate has claimed Mason Mount is finally on the receiving end of widespread praise – all thanks to Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.
Gareth Southgate claimed: “I was saying in the autumn that he is a very good player. Now Thomas Tuchel picks him, everyone agrees. When Frank Lampard did it, it didn’t count for some reason.”
Mount found himself on the scoresheet again against Albania, scoring the second in England’s 2-0 away victory. The win maintains England 100% start to their World Cup qualifying campaign, with the Three Lions yet to concede a goal. The 22-year-old midfielder looks nailed on to secure a spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad for this summer’s European Championships, but Mount is making sure he doesn’t get ahead of himself.
Mason Mount said “My mentality is always that I just keep working hard to get into the team and stay in the team and just try to get as many games as I can. That is always my focus. Obviously very fortunate to start the last seven games and I’m in a good place at the moment and scored tonight. I am confident. I’ve just got to keep that going. Now the focus is on the next game. It is a massive game against Poland.”
Mount is likely to make it a hat-trick of appearances when England welcome Poland to Wembley on Wednesday. Southgate has long been a big fan of Mount, it wasn’t long ago that many fans regularly took to social media to question why Mount was featuring so often in place of other names such as Jack Grealish. The Chelsea number 19 has started the last seven games for England, with Southgate quick to point out how everyone else can now see Mount’s qualities, though he sarcastically quipped that this is only because he has received the Thomas Tuchel seal of approval.
