Hugo Lloris says that the Tottenham Hotspur players have started to believe again after recent results and pointed to those players who have been out of Jose Mourinho’s plans.
Hugo Lloris said “It’s not just individuals, but the whole XI who have to work hard in training, get into good habits and find confidence. For different reasons, there were individual players with different situations who were apart from the team but it’s not the case today and the manager chose them 100 per cent. It’s important to praise individuals when the players deserve it but, also, for me, it’s important to talk about the work from Lucas, Erik Lamela, and it’s not only the four players. I know people want to focus on the front four players because they have their own status but also to make great performances, to make great seasons, you need the whole team. It’s not just about the four players, it’s about the whole group of players and the last few games we’ve started to believe again, we’ve started to see convincing things. The spirit again was good. We didn’t play as we wanted in the second half at Fulham but we stuck together in the difficult time and we got the clean sheet and that’s very positive for the team. We must continue step-by-step, we must try to grab as many points as we can and finish the season.”
Spurs now sit five points off the top four with a game in hand on fourth-placed Chelsea and Lloris is not giving up on the chase.
Hugo Lloris said “Mathematically, anything is possible, but we need to focus on the reality and the reality is the next game against Crystal Palace. We need to take it game-by-game. We have a decent number of points, but we had a bad run in February, a very bad run which we are not used to seeing for many years with six defeats and it was the responsibility of everyone involved. Not just one, two or three players. When we win, we win as a team and when we lose, we lose as a team. We try to fix things, fix problems, we can see as well that the other teams struggle except Manchester City because they are flying. We still feel anything is possible. It’s important to keep the belief, play as strong as you can in the Europa League and we have a final in our minds for April, but, I repeat, game-by-game and then we will see and then we will see at the end of the season.”
Spurs went on a poor run in the Premier League to start 2021 with five defeats in six matches, but the past eight days have brought an about turn in form with back to back victories in the competition as well as progress to the Europa League last 16. On Thursday night in the 1-0 victory at Fulham, Mourinho finally selected Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Gareth Bale and Dele Alli in a starting line-up for the first time. Lloris was not keen on placing the four players above the rest, although he did slightly cryptically hint towards the different reasons that have kept the likes of Bale and Alli out of Mourinho’s team previously.
