Bryan Robson, Ryan Giggs and Dion Dubin were the three main reasons why Everton boss Howard Kendall was backing Manchester United for another league championship. The invaluable former England warhorse, the 15 million rated Welsh wunderkind and the 1 million strikers were all absent as United beat Everton 1-0 that week to glide nine points clear of their nearest rivals.
The reserve strength emphasised by this mission trio convinced envious Kendall to crown United champions with seven months of the season still remaining. Kendall also mentioned Mike Phelan, Andrei Kanchelskis, Paul Parket and Clayton Blackmore – four more internationals who were soon to make a comeback.
Howard Kendall said ‘’No one can say we are weakening the team by bringing in someone like Ryan Giggs. They have had a heavy programme and the squad that they have got is at a different level. They were missing key players like Robbo, Giggs and Dion and they still go the result. Of course, it’s a long way to go but I can’t see them dropping off, especially with all these fantastic players coming back from injuries. I think its more or less done (the title)’’
