Carlo Ancelotti has once again hinted that any future additions to the Everton squad must have a key attribute: the ability to play in more than one position.
Carlo Ancelotti said “We asked James and Gylfi to play in front and with their positions, they helped us have good possession in our attacking areas. When you look, today, for how a footballer can help your team, it is not enough to be excellent in one position. Players must be adaptable and everyone in our squad has the capabilities to help in more than one role.”
The Blues boss has spoken several times about the need for modern footballers to have flexibility and his belief was highlighted in the win over Wolves last week. Everton played without a recognised No9, instead asking Gylfi Sigurdsson and James Rodriguez to play upfront, but still came away from Molineux with a 2-1 victory. Writing in his programme notes ahead of the Blues’ FA Cup fourth round tie with Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow night, Ancelotti has offered a reminder as to his expectations on those who are currently – and who may in the future – play under him at Goodison.
