Former Leeds United player John Giles felt that FA cup was a “poisoned chalice” for Alex Ferguson who must resist the temptation and solely focus on the premier league title. He said that while the cup can cheer, it’s the league title that the United manager and fans want the most. He reminded Ferguson of the season earlier, where he did Leeds the biggest of the favour by knocking them out of the FA cup and the Littlewoods Cup. That left Howard Wilkinson’s men to focus only on one thing – win the championship.

John Giles said “Of course fans love to talk of winning the double. But the cup could be a poisoned chalice for the reds. The ambition for the double could turn into double trouble”
