Glenn Hoddle was set to buy his way out of trouble after a dreadful Chelsea display that suggests he’s in for a long hard winter. And he was set to ring the changes after revealing that chairman Ken Bates had made the money available.

Glenn Hoddle said “I have had the all clear to spend, but the people I buy must be the right ones. I will certainly experiment by bringing in some of my reserves, but we’ve been beaten by a better footballing side and that hurts! My players have got to stand up and be counted when the crowd starts to get on their backs. We looked very jaded and we were lucky and we were never truly composed. That’s a barrier we have to break down sooner rather than later.”

Mark Robins was involved in the build up to both goals by man of the match Ruel Fox and Chris Sutton. Chelsea never came to terms with the pace of winger Fox who arrived unmarked to give them a 23rdminute lead with a simple side foot finish from Mark Bowen’s cross.
