Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole believes winger Callum Hudson-Odoi has taken inspiration from Timo Werner’s finishing techniques after he scored in the Blues’ 2-1 win over Rennes in the Champions League last night. Restored to the starting line-up for the first time since the 4-0 win over FC Krasnodar a month ago, the England international repaid Frank Lampard for putting his trust in him to net the game’s opening goal. The Chelsea winger latched onto Mason Mount’s long-ball forward, got in behind the Rennes defence and cooly tucked the ball beyond goalkeeper Alfred Gomis with such calmness to claim his third goal of the season.

Joe Cole said “He’s taken it. What he’s doing is, I feel like he’s looked at Werner and why he scores goals – he runs in behind, He’s adding it to his game, we saw that with the England U21s. The first touch is great, the second touch is exquisite and what a finish. As an Englishman, and a young English player, I’d love to see him playing week-in, week-out, because he’ll only get better and better. But at the moment, he’s got these sort of moments where he’s been put in now and he’s got to hit the manager consistently right between the eyes, if he can keep doing that. He’s started this game really sharp.”
