Gary Neville has described Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s use of Donny van de Beek as a “mystery” after the Manchester United midfielder remained an unused substitute against Chelsea. The Dutchman is yet to start a Premier League game this season but had appeared from the bench in every league outing so far this term. With Solskjaer opting again for a midfield trio of Scott McTominay, Fred and Bruno Fernandes, Van de Beek was forced to watch from the sideline alongside Paul Pogba on the bench as United drew 0-0 with Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Gary Neville said “What is a little bit of a mystery is the use of van de Beek since being signed for £40m, He doesn’t seem to be at the forefront of Ole’s plans in every game. It’s a bit of a mystery, that one. The more he doesn’t start, the more he doesn’t come on, well, a £40m-player, ordinarily, you get him into the team. He must be thinking, ‘What am I doing here?’ at this moment in time.”
